AppleTV & AirPlay, how's it working for you?

At work we've got a conference room with a TV connected to an AppleTV. We use our Macs to connect via AirPlay. We always have issues with it:
- Sometimes the device doesn't show up
- Sometimes it won't connect because of an error
- Often it takes a long time to connect
- Sometimes it disconnects every few minutes
- Generally PowerPoint likes to crash when you start presenting over AirPlay
- Sometimes the resolution is off, or the picture only takes up part of the screen

Anyone else have these sorts of issues? I wonder if it's just how unreliable the system is, or if it's a problem with our WiFi network.

Works for me with none of those problems over Ethernet. And several of my clients use it for slideshows and presentations with no complaints.

Have you checked the RSSI in that room?

Odd - I've not had any of those problems when connecting using this MBPr.

Does it work with an iOS device? Just trying to figure out if the issue is the ATV or the Macs.

Funny that you ask about Airplay. It is interfering with Netflix on Safari for me. I'm not sure why. Netflix works just fine with Google Chrome...

The signal strength is pretty good in that room... though the same could be said for possibly a couple dozen other networks.

Haven't tried it with an iOS device, but have tried it with at least four Macs running 10.9 & 10.10

Would also love an answer to this. Using iPhone 5s, iPad 2, and iPad mini 2 and have most of the problems M A V I C listed. All iOS devices and ATV have latest updates. Just assumed it was a series of bad ATV updates over the past year.

When my AppleTV was operating via WIFI I couldn't airplay anything to it. I couldn't even stream an audio podcast. Now that my AppleTV is connected via ethernet I can airplay pretty much anything from my iPhone. Airplay from my MBP is still spotty though.

Love it! I took my AppleTV to my dad's last month. Set it up on my Dad's wifi (my brother and I paying for his net service) and all of us, but one brother who has a Samsung, took turns sharing videos, pics and youtube favorites!

To be clear, when the AppleTV is on wifi itself, the problems are even worse. In this case, it's connected via ethernet and the Macs connect to it over wifi.

Ours is connected via ethernet. AirPlay hasn't been a problem from our iPhones but lately the AirPlay
button never shows in the Menubar of my MacBook Air anymore.

The last year has been very depressing for many Apple products. If they continue to push out features that barely work, breaking older features, removing features, etc they are going to wake up some day to people laughing at the "it just works" phrase. I love Apple but this is just another example of their quality problems. How do you release a modern OS that breaks WIFI the way Yosemite did?

Flawlessly. I use it just about every day for up to several hours and have been doing so for a couple of years.

Late 2012 iMac running 10.10.2 to a second generation Apple TV.

I regularly use an AppleTV 2 (connected with Ethernet) and have never experienced any of the problems you discussed with various iPads. The AppleTV has been very reliable. The only issue we see once in awhile is it will not start Netflix. Rebooting the ATV resolves this problem.

I use it every day in my classroom. ATV is connected to my SmartBoard via HDMI and to the network via WiFi. Student work on 30 iPads can be shared via Airplay (mostly Keynote). But we also routinely connect my MBA and a number of student owned iOS devices.

Rare connection issues are usually resolved by restarting my Airport Extreme.

I stream SLING, and Amazon Prime movies/tv shows to my ATV using a 2009 MacBookPro, a 2011 Mac Mini, an iPhone 5C, an iPhone 4S, an iPad mini, and two different iPad Minis. I have 2 ATVs, in separate areas of my home and experience no problems using them with AirPlay.
