"The Empty Chair"

Back in August I came across this Guinness ad. Was it here? This forum is my primary source of Internet flotsam and jetsam. Anyway, just today a friend who finally figured out how to access her Gmail account reminded me of the email I sent round to friends and family. If it's a repost, I won't apologize. It's beautifully done, and important:

I think the melody in the background is the old hymn, "Leaning on the Everlasting Arms." Might be a similar one, but that's what it sounds like to me. This is a version Iris Dement recorded for the remake of the movie "True Grit," which film was a desecration of the original, but ignore that. Just listen to Iris:

She also recorded the song on all gospel album called Lifeline, here:

I can not hear that song without remembering Robert Mitchum being totally terrifying in the outstanding The Night of the Hunter:

Everlasting Arms it is, which I always thought would make an excellent name for a pub.

When I first saw your post title I instantly thought Clint Eastwood. While I like Eastwood immensely, I'm glad it was this instead (at least for this side).

I missed the ad during the first go around. Thanks for the repost.

Wait...what? You mean the Coen bros remake?

Why a desecration? While I have admittedly not read the book, my sense was that the Coen version was probably closer to the story, with less happy ending stuff. And I thought Jeff Bridges' part was pretty compelling.

I was afraid that remark would create a diversion. The original "True Grit" was a great and heartwarming story, a big part of the legacy of John Wayne. The Jeff Bridges version was just bizarre, full of garish Coen Brothers characters, twists, and apparitions. To me it was just a travesty; it left a bad taste and an unpleasant memory.

Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana discussing all three True Grits:

I've never seen either movie nor read the book, but that article kind of makes me want to.
