Ever since I upgraded to Yosemite (months ago), I've had a big slowdown in how long it takes for my MacBook Pro to unmount an external disk, flash drive or eject a CD/DVD. Is this normal for Yosemite or is it something with my system?

Before I upgraded from Mavericks, unmounting a disk didn't take more than a couple of seconds. With Yosemite, it takes 12 to 13 seconds to unmount my 1TB FW800 external drive. Ejecting a CD took 10 seconds.

I have a mid-2012 13" MacBook Pro with 16GB RAM, running 10.10.2.

I'm just wondering if this is something unusual with my system or a common occurrence. I did a Web search and did not see any reports about this.

No Mac that came with 10.10.x had FireWire or an optical drive. Does a USB 3.0 drive take as long to unmount?

What's this 'optical drive' you speak of?!

Seriously, I use two external drives every day on this MBPR. I do not think the eject process is especially slow, but you might be right.

The two drives - one is FW via a TB hub, the other USB via the same TB hub.

You are correct but it has nothing to do with his machine. He has a mid 2012 machine which probably came with 10.8 and optical disk.

If an OS was optimized for current hardware, one might expect that non-current hardware might not work as well with the new OS, as compared to the OS that came with it.

If an OS was optimized for current hardware, one might expect that non-current hardware might not work as well with the new OS, as compared to the OS that came with it.

but 2012 is not that old, besides Apple more or less forces us to upgrade the OS (no longer security patches for 10.6.8, and I believe also they stopped updating 10.7/10.8, probably soon if not already abandon 10.9).

It seems dependent on the machine. A USB 3.0 drive connected to an MPow USB 3.0 hub connected to an Inateck USB 3.0 card in an '08 Mac Pro running 10.10.3 unmounts more slowly than the same drive connected to the same model MPow USB 3.0 hub directly connected to an Early 2013 Macbook Pro running 10.10.3. The difference is just enough to be noticeable.

FWIW: Apple still sells a MBP with an optical drive and FW that ships with Yosemite. And it's their cheapest model too, I guess it's less expensive to include all of that extra hardware.

Okay, I wasn't able to log out earlier because I was in the middle of taxes. I just set up a temporary account and logged in. It looks like I have an issue with my main account because the external drive unmounted almost instantaneously on the temporary account.

Something in my main account is causing the issue. Is a clean install of Yosemite the answer to fixing this?

excellent, now we know it can be fixed, it is not because the current OS is not optimized for older hardware.

A clean instal will most likely fix the issue but I would try some troubleshooting before you do that. Is there anything in your start-up items? have you run a utility like Onyx? have you tried a safe boot to clean up the cache files? have you reset PRAM? I would try all these before bringing in the nuclear weapons.

That's would be ridiculous. There is absolutely no reason Apple couldn't "optimize" Yosemite for more than one generation of hardware.

It is what it is.

Ran Onyx (I had run it recently but did again just to see if it would help) and it is still the same. I'll have to look at the other options later. While I'd rather not go through a clean install, it may be the best option.

Yeah, and there was no reason that Apple didn't optimize OS X for USB 2.0 versus FireWire, but it still took them 2 years and that was AFTER they waited 2-1/2 years to include it.

Thanks for posting that. This MBPR's performance definitely eroded with Yosemite. I ran everything up to reinstalling the OS, and added disk repair into the mix. Found several errors.

So far, a little Zippier.

So far, I've gone through everything but starting in Recovery Mode to repair the hard drive (although no errors have been reported by any of my utilities) and clean install.

When booted in Safe Mode, the external hard drive unmounted nearly instantaneously so something in my system is causing the bog down when all is loaded. Now, it's a matter of figuring out what that is.
