If an OS was optimized for current hardware, one might expect that non-current hardware might not work as well with the new OS, as compared to the OS that came with it.

If an OS was optimized for current hardware, one might expect that non-current hardware might not work as well with the new OS, as compared to the OS that came with it.
but 2012 is not that old, besides Apple more or less forces us to upgrade the OS (no longer security patches for 10.6.8, and I believe also they stopped updating 10.7/10.8, probably soon if not already abandon 10.9).

That's would be ridiculous. There is absolutely no reason Apple couldn't "optimize" Yosemite for more than one generation of hardware.
