mp3 player compatibility...

My friends kids just bought a Creative ZEN Nano and an RCA something or other mp3 player. Now he is trying to figure out how to get them to work with his mac. Is there a way to get the play nice? I couldn't find anything on Creative's site and i didn't even know where to begin to look for the RCA doohickey.

My experience has been that if they mount like a drive on the Mac desktop, they'll work pretty well even if they aren't directly compatible with iTunes. You can drag-n-drop from iTunes into the Finder, although sometimes only a limited number of files will move per drag (like 10-15).

If it doesn't mount, I think you're SOL with that player.

There was a hack/driver for an old creative mp3 player, made it compatible with iTunes. For the life of me, I dont remember which version of iTunes it worked with.

Believe me, this guy is a real sad case. It seems everything he touches turns to crap. I JUST redid his entire computer this past weekend. erased, clean install, reinstall all his apps etc. running like a top when i was done. The NEXT day he has a problem. the NEXT day! Turned out to be a crappy keyboard, but good GOD he has the worst luck. So i just kind of chuckled (in a sad way) to myself when he told he let his kids buy those...things.

The Archos Jukebox plug-in permits many players to show up in iTunes similar to an iPod.

Your ridicule is misplaced.

If someone feels more comfortable using another player or doesn't care to invest the money in an expensive iPod when there are perfectly useful alternatives at half the price, they ought not to be locked out of such choices by Apple.

First, I didn't know that the Creative Zen Nano was "half the price" of the equivalent iPod.

Second, Apple isn't locking anybody out. Those other manufacturers are free to make their own equivalent to iTunes.
