Because there is likely no benefit? But there are a large number of drawbacks.

Along the same lines -- is there something you are hoping to gain from doing it? or is there something with your current setup thats a drawback?

Ive got nearly the same setup in my 2010 iMac, seems rather straight forward to me to do it with the separate drives.

I only have a 1 TB internal, bit enough for what I need, hoping to replace it with a 1 TB SSD when they go under $150 later this year.

can you be more specific?

it seemed like it would be nice to have a single volume instead of two.

but not to nice that i want to open a can of worms.

Why would it be nice? The drawbacks I can think of are that you'd be giving up some space, some speed and you run the risk that if one disk fails, you'd lose everything.

I would say - depends on your use of that iMac.

If you can basically live within the SSD for boot drive and almost all user info, then the Fusion Drive has no benefit,

If you regularly access more than 250GB of stuff, then the Fusion drive will be better.

Another way to look at this - what's on the 5TB drive? Is that just a bunch of movies or other media? If so, then live on the SSD and have the 5TB be a big closet of data you only access as needed.
