iPhone 6 camera is good, but not good enough

I went to get my car worked on at the dealer last week. I knew it would take a while, I knew that Folsom Lake was within walking distance and figured I'd take a hike while my car was being worked on, BUT decided to not take a camera with me - I'd have my iP6 in case of emergency.

Well, DAMN, that was a bad decision.

I hiked for about 1.5hr and on the hike I saw, a green heron, a racoon, 2 fem and one male wild turkey in full display, a rattle snake, 2 snowy egrets, plenty of Canada Geese including a large family of babies, a coyote and lots more. Took lots of iP6 pics and none of them are worth showing here. I need to plan my days better.

HOWEVER... although longer range pics are useless with a phone, very close range pics of static subjects works pretty darned well.

Just took these on my walk to the store:

Sounds about right. That's been my experience with the camera in my iPad.

Like I said... not worth posting here... the snake is in the center of the pic - he was a big one, I'm not getting any closer than this, but I would have gotten an amazing pic with my SX50 or even the ZS19:

I found this to be the case when we were on our trip out west last month. I did not take my camera, only used the 6+. I could have gotten better distance pics with a dedicated camera, but it sure was nice not to have to lug one around or transfer pics from it to my other devices. Life is full of trade-offs, I guess.

Looks like the iPhone captures a good amount of detail. But the -I hate to say it- bokeh of the lizard close-ups is awful, bad enough to draw attention away from the subject of the photo.

Nice photos!

I took my iPhone6+ and SX50 to the National Zoo Friday. I used both, and got different good photos in different scenarios.

I LOVE being able to post the photo nearly instantly with the iPhone - great for sending an instant postcard to my family.

But the panda shots are far better from the SX-50 - once I got back to the hotel to upload.

I did not have the direct mode setup on my seldom-used EyeFi card:

Sounds like using the right tool for the right job is the way to go.

I'm sure it's got a name, but I would call it "The common Lizard." Those are nice shots of that guy/gal.
