Mac Mini 2012 & 4k display?
Posted by: Mr645

I found notes on how to get the 2012 Mini to do a 4k monitor at 31hz but it all was done on 10.8 and the same hack seems to have stopped working on 10.9.
Anyone know a way to use a 4k (actually UHD 3840 x 2160 )? on 10.10?

You supposedly need Intel HD Graphics 4200 to run 4K @ 30 Hz. The 2012 mini only has HD 4000.

The highest rez display the 2012 Mini will be able to run at a decent refresh rate is the LG 3440x1440 monitors, which run at 3440x1440 @50Hz through Thunderbolt. FYI the 2011 Minis will also run this monitor at full rez at 50Hz through TBolt. Both run it at 2560x1080 @60Hz through Displayport, which is not useful for computing but looks great for movies.

The 2014 Minis and 2013 Retina MBPros run it at 3440x1440 @60Hz through TBolt and Displayport.

This is puzzling information.

I have been looking at the 2012 Mini to stream movies from Amazon Prime.

Does this mean that I wouldn't be able to stream movies from the Mini to my 60" Panasonic plasma TV?

You have a 4K Panasonic plasma TV?

your 60" Plasma TV is 1080p (in other words, 2K, not 4K). You will be fine.

That's good news! Thank you.

Now, all I have to do is find an affordable 2012 Mini. smiling smiley

Yea, 1080p is fine. I have a Mac mini 2012 core i5 in a sales room connected to a 46" 1080p TV and was thinking about getting one of the UHD TVs to show photos. Refresh is not that important and I could always drop to 1080p res for video or other content.
