Flickr 4.0 - wow

In reference to this thread about going all in with Photos and iPhoto Cloud Library

[forums.macresource.com]

Flickr just released version 4.0 of their service. Revamped iOS and Android apps, a new desktop uloader and new features.

Been playing around with it for a day or so now and went ahead and decided to upload my entire photo library from my Mac using the new Uploadr app.

So far, I really like it. I still have concerns regarding privacy, etc. since it's a free service and they can essentially do/say what they want to. But, having said that, Flickr really makes a strong case against iCloud Photo Library b/c of the terabyte of storage and b/c it's free.

I'll see how it goes and how integration with the Mac and iOS goes in the coming days and may consider dropping my iCloud subscription either down to the 99 cent per month for 20GB or the free 5GB level.

Here's is David Pogue's take on it, though he can't technically review it b/c he works for Yahoo:

Nice! Always good to have another free, convenient cloud backup option.

That's kind of funny given the whole "Dammit, Jim, I'm an entertainer not a reporter writer!" thing.

I hope he's learned his lessons.

Here's the review.

Flickr is the boss. Just do it.

Flickr has been automatically uploading stuff from mobile for a long time though.

That is true. But, with desktop integration, it means that you can easily upload your entire photo library now b/c I doubt most people had all their photos stored on their mobile device.

Plus, they have revamped the interface on mobile and web and it seems much more intuitive save for the few deficiencies as noted in Pogue's walkthrough.

It is more intuitive for sure. That's the key.

People should really take advantage of tagging their images. Consolidate them into albums and then similar albums into Collections. That helps a lot. The new "camera roll" feature helps a lot in that regard.

If only it wasn't a YAHOO service...
Doesn't mean I definitely won't try it, but with their utter incompetence at email security, I am more than a little hesitant.

Ironically, flickr.com is one of the safest places for your images. You own it all and can apply very specific usage tolerances.

I don't doubt their intent...
But Yahoo Mails contact list is supposed to be "private" too, and they regularly let spammers blast out a quarter billion emails using Yahoo Mail users contact lists, by the tens of thousands.
Let's just say my level of trust with anything Yahoo owns has been harmed... grinning smiley

True to the rule, free is never free. Clicking through some photos starting at the Flickr home page, 3 advertisements in a large handful of clicks. Big ads that take up the whole image area. Gotta pay for 1TB of storage somehow.

I get to pay $24.99 per year for unlimited and no ads. I've never seen an ad.
