iPad issues with "Messages"

I have the iPad model that was out just before the current model. Every version of iOS 8 (maybe even iOS 7, if I had it on there) has had challenges with Messages. Open it up, stalls and quits. When it does start, takes forever when selecting a person to send a note to. When deleting messages, they keep coming back. Countless other issues that I won't get into here. (I do have a significant amount of messages stored amongst all the messages, would that effect performance?)

I have tried restarting, resetting network settings, restoring the iPad (from a backup). Lots of other people complaining about the issue as well.

Only thing I have not tried is to turn iMessages/Messages off all devices then log back into them (as suggested by one site). I currently have them tied to two computers, one iPhone, and one iPad.

Since I have a flaky mute switch on the side of my unit, plus still under Apple Care, I think I am going to throw up the white flag and get with Apple Genius to help resolve.

Anyone else deal with similar issue?

Very stable on my iPad. Back it up in iTunes before you get the switch fixed, then do a clean install to see how a fresh install of Messages works. The only issue I have with Messages on my iPad is that texts arrive rather slowly, sometimes even requiring that I reply to a text before I can receive the incoming text (receiving on my iPhone, the replying using Messages on my iPad 3 and iOS 6).

Huh.

Texts arrive on my two iPads (iP3 and Mini2) before my 'Phone and Watch.

Good Idea Speedy...

I can even try that tonight... Just play with a fresh iPad. I was going to delete all my Messages content to see if that would improve performance. I have all that content on my iPhone and computer for the most part, so not losing anything.

No cell service on my iPad. It may be that Charter feels a need to slow down my texts. Note that I am using iOS 6 on all devices so that version of Messages may be slow.

Yes, I had this EXACT problem on my wife's iPad last week. Tried everything (sign out, sign in, delete conversations, etc., etc). The only thing that finally fixed it was to restore to factory condition and set up as a NEW device. Restoring from a backup did NOT work as the problem reoccurred. Made for a bit of re-downloading her apps and such, but it has been working great ever since. iPad 3, 16 GB, iOS 8.3

Seems to be a random problem that is out there as I found quite a few instances described online with no really good information about what triggers the behavior.

No cell service on my iPad.

Nor on my iP3, and not activated on my M2.

Prolly then it is my iOS 6 heresy.
