How Do I Pull a Still Image Out of a DVD?
Posted by: mrlynn

I want to pull a still shot out of an interview DVD, and save it for use in my blog. Can iDVD do this? Or any other OS application? Graphic Converter?

Of course, I can just pause and take a screen shot, but I assume there is a more elegant way to do it.

VLC will let you save a screenshot of a paused DVD. Apple's DVD player app didn't use to allow for screenshots (would just generate a black image), I assume that hasn't changed. Just use VLC.

Define "elegant."

Screenshot is usually what I do, advance frame by frame to find one without blur or interlacing artifacts, screenshot the thing, pull it into Photoshop for quickie crop and corrections.

You won't get any better resolution or quality from a different method unless you go back to the source format.

If you do go the screenshot route, make sure your playback window is at 100% for the best quality.

iMovie>Share>Image extracts a still image from a video file.

VNC will do a screen capture, but you'll find that each individual frame on a video is actually pretty blurry. Your brain and eyes do a lot of cleanup work to make a pretty video.

A pause and screenshot will work (try using the keyboard arrows to perfect the point). You could also import to iMovie 8 or 9, which might give better quality and control. You would then save the frame, not take a picture of it.

There are screen capture techniques that some video editing software does that uses several frames to make a sharper, cleaner single frame. Works better on steady shots then moving shots.

Thanks for all the suggestions and comments. I downloaded VLC, so will try that, as well as maybe others.

I just use the OS.

Ultimately you're talking about 720x480, so there's only so much detail you can squeeze out of it.

UPDATE: VLC has a Snapshot command, which worked effortlessly. Just a matter of finding an opportune frame.

Many thanks!
