Need someone to send me $1500. Could use Square, but 3.5%... pfft. Options?
Posted by: jdc
Date: May 28, 2015 01:51PM
Trying to get it faster than snail mail from East Coast.

They can pay by CC, but Square wants 3.5% for keyed entries = $50 fee.

I could setup a PP account, but assuming it would take days to clear $1500 for a new account?

Dont want anything difficult on their end, so no silly Western Union or whatever.

Options? Ideas? TIA

FedEx?
No idea if it would be cheaper than your already-ruled-out $50 or not.

Priority Mail would be 2-3 days and less than $6.

Have you checked with your bank(s) to see what person-to-person payment options they have (i.e. Chase Quickpay)?

Ghetto option: Have them scan the check or take good photos. Email and print them out. Use an app to deposit the check... No idea how/if that would work...

Used to send $600 to my brother without fees. Did take a call to the bank to assuage their fears of fraud, however.

If you both happen to have Fidelity accounts you can set up a joint checking account that both of you can access. That person moves the $1500 over from their account to the joint account and you take it out to your account. My daughter and I did this a couple of weeks ago and I put in $10 to test it. The account and $10 showed up on both of our accounts immediately. You could also do the same thing if you both have Wells Fargo accounts; surely it would be possible with other financial institutions.

I have give them a cashiers chek for $5,000 that I happen to have, they can cache it at there bank, keep $1500 an give me $3500 change in cache. I will then await the prompt arrival of your check for $1500. Consider it a temporary fiendly loan.

Or have them go to their bank and do a transfer to you. Immediate, reasonably cheap and safe.

Yeah, I mentioned it, but no feedback. Not sure if they have fees or a "holding" period.

Fees for sure. 3.5% I think, if you don't already have an account you will most likely have a holding period.

It was from a Credit Union to a Credit Union.

Like Gareth's "ghetto" suggestion, only less ghetto, but also less secure:

If they're reeeeally trustworthy, have them download your bank's app, login as you, and do the photo deposit thing. I'm not sure about your bank (if they even have this option), but when I do deposits with Wells Fargo they quote a couple days, but it always goes in much quicker than that.

You can do the photo deposit thing with an image of the check. If your bank only has an app-based system, then you would have to print on to paper and then photograph the paper.

My bank has a browser based system. I just select the jpeg files (front and back) of the check and done.

Either way, the check images get converted to tiny, low-res black and white images by the bank so quality is of little issue. Computer just needs to be able to interpret the account number, check number, etc.

edit: oh, didn't see Gareth's post. Yes, it will work.

No fees for Paypal Gift but it would only work if you already had an account set up. It might take too long to verify a new account. And yes, depending on your bank, it can take a few days for the funds to clear but it seems like Gift from a bank account (not CC) is pretty quick.

I don't have experience with some of the suggested electronic options but Dwolla sounds like it might work unless it takes too long to get set up.

Otherwise, the cheapest options would be (starting with the cheapest):

* Bank-to-bank transfer, either with a Bill Pay with you as the payee (unless it takes too long for the transfer to go through), or a service like Chase Quickpay or BofA's or Wells Fargo's P2P transfer options.

* FedEx, UPS or USPS a check for overnight or possibly 2nd day delivery.

* Bank wire transfer. (Virtually instant access to the funds with a fee a little less than the CC fees.)

Walmart offers two options. To transfer $1500 in 10 minutes, they'll charge you $120. If you want it there in 4 hours, they'll charge you $30. The money gets sent to a Walmart store. For more info, just search on 'send money' from walmart.com

As a guy that uses Square for three different business uses...I would use it and eat the $50 as a convenience. Square is a zillion times better than PayPal. Most payments process the same day at 5pm.

Square offers a lot of different way to do transactions for small businesses. I sure hope they stay in business!

I used Square as soon as it was possible. It allowed me to capture business that I otherwise would have missed out on. Piece of cake. When you think about what we had before with banks and merchant accounts and bulky machines that needed a telephone line or the one that used wireless but cost a thousand dollars for the swiper machine. I shudder that I dealt with a bank.

Square would have worked, but they have a deposit schedule that akes 2 days when you deposit on Friday = Monday.

Payments taken before 5 p.m. PT/8 p.m. ET will be available in your bank account the next business day.
Payments taken after 5 p.m. PT/8 p.m. ET will be available in your bank account by the second business day.
On Friday, the cut-off is 1 p.m. PT/4 p.m. ET. Any payments taken after 1p.m. PT/4 p.m. ET will be sent in the following deposit.
Deposits are not sent on Saturdays.

So it looks like if you swipe a card After 5 PM Thursday, doesnt go in until Monday. It looks like I would done it before that to get the $$ today. No money comes in on Saturday.

It is what it is, but I wonder about how long some of these "rules" should actually last? I mean these days we live in a 24/7 world, and the net allows us to work worldwide instantly anytime. You would think that banking might catch up with that fact and start offering deposits all the time, everyday, everyhour. Its not like theres some guy sitting in an office approving every deposit that comes thru a bank.

Im in Cali, and have clients in Portland, Seattle, Billings, Pontiac, Charlotte, Nashville and Sarasota -- 5 years ago I might not have thought that was even possible -- especially with large graphics. But no more. Fast net and Dropbox have made those limitations a thing of the past.

You gotta remember that the government has to squeeze itself between each transaction. That's why most purchases appear as "pending" when you check your online account. Checks have to "clear" the government clearinghouse as does each and every transaction. If they ever bust you for something, they'll have their proof (kind of a pun since it's proof operators that historically sent checks to clearinghouses). In one of my former lives I was an Operations Supervisor for a bank.
