Email not deleting

This doesn't seem to be a new issue with Apple Mail but it just started with me a few weeks ago.

I can delete the email, empty the trash, leave Mail and browse a while - I return to mail and everything I've deleted is back. Its shown as "read" but its still in the IN box.

Not sure it matters, but IMAP or POP?

restart the app, if no change, restart the computer... or whatever device you are using...

Try rebulding the affected mail box.

Run the DU to verify the disk just in case.

Then rebuild the indexes. (Skip step 1 from this link):
