Apple announces replacement program for 3TB hard drives in 2012 and 2013 iMacs
Program ends December 19, 2015 or 3 years from purchase date, whichever is longer.

by Andrew Cunningham - Jun 19, 2015 2:27pm EDT
Apple has just announced a replacement program for 3TB hard drives in 27-inch iMacs purchased between December of 2012 and September of 2013—approximately the lifespan of the 2012 iMac, though some of the first 2013 iMacs sold could potentially be affected as well. Apple says the drives "may fail under certain conditions."

Apple offers 3TB hard drives in its larger iMacs as an upgrade option, either as a standalone drive or as part of a Fusion Drive setup. Either way, enter your Mac's serial number on the replacement program page to check and see if you're eligible for a replacement. You'll want to back your data up before replacing the drive since you'll need to reinstall a fresh copy of OS X on the new drive when you get it.

The program ends on December 19, 2015 or three years from your iMac's purchase date, whichever comes last. If you've already paid to replace a 3TB drive and your Mac is affected by the problem, you can contact Apple to negotiate for a reimbursement.

I'm guessing those were Seagate drives.

Yep, my Fusion 3 TB drive was giving SMART errors a few months back. Thankfully had AppleCare and got it swapped out. Thank goodness for Super Duper.

When a company sells a defective product, they shouldn't be allowed to set a deadline for customers to make claims.

I disagree. that depends a lot of the expected lifetime of the item. a 10 year old car with defective airbags? sure, it needs to be recalled. a 10 year old computer with defective hard drive or bad capacitors? it's time to get a new one anyway.

Like it or not, 3 years is the average lifespan of a hard drive. Some last longer, some last far less. But 3 years is the average. Why do you think HD manufactures have been steadily cutting down their warranties to 1 and 2 years? Because the drives don't last long and it was costing them too much in warranty claims.

You can't Google?

"Seagate and Western Digital are cutting back on hard drive warranties, in some instances from five years to one, in order to save money or redirect it to product development."

Netiquette dictates that the person stating the claim provide evidence to support the claim. It's the year 2015 - do you really need to have that explained that to you this many years in?
