Crazy, seeing used Nikon D800 for around $1200-1400

I was thinking about upgrading a d800 to a d810. My main reason is the increase in frame rate from 4fps to 5fps. I know it doesn't sound like much of a difference but that extra frame per second is what makes the d810 a more useable action camera. I shot the 2002 Winter Olympics with a 5fps D1h.

I was shocked to see the D800 selling between $1200-1400 on eBay. If anyone is thinking about getting into full frame, the D800 is more bang for the buck than a d600/610.

Needless to say, I will probably be blowing my money in camera gear and upgrading ye olde Mac Pro with and SSD.

Yes, the bottom has fallen out of the full-frame body market. At these price points, you might as well hang on to it as a second (third?) body.

Silly question from a not-photographer... what doe's "full frame" mean?

It used to mean that you hired your female assistant to be "full-framed" like Christina Hendricks of Mad Men.

Now, to much PC and this tradition has faded . . .

A full-frame digital SLR is a digital single-lens reflex camera (DSLR) fitted with a 35mm format (36×24 mm) image sensor. This is in contrast to cameras with smaller sensors (for instance, those with a size equivalent to APS-C-size film), much smaller than a full 35 mm frame.

in practical terms it means a 24mm lens functions as a 24mm lens, not a 35mm lens due to the smaller sensor (and likewise for all lenses).

And Danny - my first 5fps camera was a 1973 Nikon F2 with and MD2/MB1 motor drive attached. It cost around $1200 back then (which would be about $6500 in today's dollars).

one advantage of a full frame camera and the resulting image is you can very successfully crop or re-adjust the frame within the image without any obvious loss of resolution.

even within the video/motion acquisition universe, full frame cameras allow for critical re-framing.

ymmv

be well.

Ah, Christina... Anyway, you can think of a full frame camera compared to an APS-C camera as the difference between, say, a 35mm film camera and a 120 (or 2 and a quarter, or a 6x6) film camera. The larger film size gave you a higher quality image.

New 5d3 can be had for $2000, yet I see most used ones advertised at that price or above. I wonder if they actually sell and for how much after how long. I desire a full-frame Canon to a certain extent but I think that body is a bit long in the tooth for two grand.

I picked up a 70d refurb for $650 and the live-view auto focus, facial recognition, focus tracking in live view, touch screen, swivel screen puts the 7d1 to shame. The only thing I miss is that the rear wheel and joystick are smaller and futzy to operate. Think I'll wait for the 6D2, or maybe just stick with aps-c.

I have some great crop-frame lenses that I wouldn't want to give up, but also a couple of full-frame lenses that just aren't done justice by 1.6x. First world problems.

The Canon 5D2 will drop more in price when the 5Ds/5Dr and the rumored 5D4 ship. The 6D will be replaced soon also, I see that one dropping in price.

For what I can get for a D800, I may as well hold on to it at this point and try to find a used D810.

The 800 has a few limitations. First the high ISO noise level are not so good and that seems to be a big feature for many these days. And the RAW files only come in full size which is huge and many people are finding that 36MP is great for some things but a waste for many other uses. The 610 may be a better choice for most people.

If you really meant 5D2 not 3 (III), I wouldn't touch the 5D2 unless it dropped to an insane price. The 6D is a better camera that can be found for about $900.

Yeah, I meant 5D3.

While not as good as 24mp Nikon D600/D610 and D750, it isn't a slouch and surprisingly good for 36mp.

If you are in the market for really good high ISO performance, the D3s and D4 are pretty good, even a D3 is still really good.

I really like the D3, especially with nice examples selling for under $1,000 on the used market. I real bargain.

The D3 still holds up very well for how old it is. I am hoping the D4 prices keep dropping.
