Pending daddyhood!

Hi everyone,

The subject says it all! My wife and I are expecting and Baby Day is just three weeks away. I waited before announcing this because I didn't want to take away from the thread Matt started last week about his pending fatherhood. But, the clock is ticking and I decided it was time to let the community know that, in less than a month, I'll be a daddy!

It's been a long difficult road, filled with moments of joy, disappointment and devastation. I can't even begin to say how I feel about being a father. You know me, though, I'll always give it my best shot.

It's terrifying! It's exhilarating! It's stressful! It's agonizing! It's awesome! It's incredible! So many decisions. So many factors to consider. So much to get done before baby day. Sometimes I don't know whether I'm moving forwards, backwards, up, down, left, right, or inside-out. And the baby isn't even here yet!

All I can say is that my life has already changed dramatically and I know this is just the beginning. smiling smiley

Nights can be pretty long too!

Almost 20 years on, I can recall—now with longing—me standing for hours at a time holding our daughter, rocking her and humming, "Lullaby, and good night....." It was the only thing that would get her to sleep. She's much better now.

Congrats! There will be time when you'll be happier than you ever imagined you could be.

Congratulations and the very best of luck to Mrs. and baby. And to you.. but you have to MAKE your own luck.

Fatherhood is, IMHO, the ultimate test of a man. Your wife and your child are 100% dependent on you to be THERE.

You can say that again!! A hearty congratulations to you and the mom. You haven't even scratched the surface of how your life is about to change. Having a pregnant wife and an impending event is a vastly simpler situation than having both a wife who has just gone through childbirth plus a new being who suddenly needs everything from you. Don't worry, it'll get easier (or so I'm told). I'm not sure when, but I'm hoping it happens before my kids reach 30. Just be happy that it'll be a few years before the kid is asking your for money and having meltdowns about career choices.

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

Wonderful! The one experience I wish for every father is, starting as soon as your baby is old enough, snuggling up every night and reading books together. For at least the first 8 years. As the years go by, just keep picking books a little beyond the kid's ability to read it for themselves.

This is one of so many ways you will give the world to them.

You'll be fine. I was terrified because I had never changed a diaper. After one or two, you'll be a pro. And I was afraid I wouldn't know what to do if he wouldn't stop crying. My advice to you is the same as my advice to Matt. Learn how to swaddle the kid. That seemed to work about 90% of the time for me.

And I was afraid I wouldn't know what to do if he wouldn't stop crying.

We had this down by kid #2. It's one of 4 things:

Feed him/her.
Change his/her diaper.
Put him/her to sleep.
Burp him/her (not as often as the other 3).

If they are still crying see a doctor. With kid #2 on day five we did all 4 to no effect and saw the doc. Short story: meningitis. #2 was OK and didn't end up running a very high temp while in the hospital (102.7°F, IIRC) and is OK, but that also shows you that you really do know your baby well, even at 5 days old.

Luckily (well, sort of) for us myself and my brother also had meningitis when we were young so I wasn't as bloody paranoid about it as some other parents who've only read about it on the internet.

And super congratulations to Robert M! A second to the advice on reading books to him or her as often as possible. Our oldest is an avid reader (OK, and Minecraft player) and took to reading even more than I did as a kid.

Robert M,

Once again, Congratulations! I know you told me a few months ago when we talk on the phone (we were testing your google voice - obihai gizmo) and I was just thinking of you yesterday, I thought you must be getting really close, so I was about to send a PM to ask how it is going.

Keep us posted, and yes, I am looking forward to a FIVE STAT REVIEW, LOL.

Hi everyone,

Many thanks for the congratulations and well wishes. Y'all brought my wife to tears! And, for the record, we're already reading to our bundle of joy! We try to make time for it every night, despite all of the craziness of her pending birth. She already seems to like Aesop's fables! - lol!

No reviews planned except for a guide for determining the best way to dispose of dirty diapers. I'm thinking of donating them to the US Air Force. After all, they're God's gift to biological warfare. smiling smiley
