what's your favorite sandwich?
Posted by: davemchine
Date: October 27, 2006 11:26PM
I like tuna mixed with onions and a little bit of sweet relish. I also like ham with provolone and onions and letuce and tomatoes. But I think my absolute favorite is a turkey sandwich on white bread with mayonaise. Oh, I also like egg salad but the turkey is the winner. Now I'm not talking about store turkey, i'm talking about cooking a turkey at home and using the dark meat for the sandwich. Yummy!

Tuna fish with lots of chopped celery and onion on toast or a croissant with sliced tomato.

A hot kosher half turkey/half lean corned beef on seedless rye with a little russian dressing and cole slaw.

But since I'm nowhere near any place that makes such a sandwich, a Kerry-style Philly cheesesteak (Swiss, not 'merican, xtra onions) will do me just fine...

But since I'm on a diet right now, I'm pissed off and hungry.

California-style sandwich. Roast beef with avocado, sour cream, dijon mustard, lettuce, tomato, perhaps some sprouts, finely chopped onions all on an onion roll. Of course the roast beef MUST be rare to medium rare and freshly cooked...none of that nasty packaged stuff. In fact any sandwich made with meat out of a plastic bag is to be SHUNNED!

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

* Roast Beef Po-Boy. Heaven. What I miss most about my old home town.

* Club. Little bit of everything, though there's always a problem with every restaurant trying to make it too damn big.

* Chick-Fil-A Chicken Salad Sandwich. A rare treat; no two places make chicken salad the same and no one makes it as good as they do.

Fresh mozarella with sun-dried tomatoes, basil, vinaigrette; or a variant with roasted peppers instead of the sun-dried tomatoes. From a local Italian deli.

BLT + avacado, when all the ingredients are real -- real crispy bacon, fat tomato

A proper Nawlins-style shrimp and oyster Po-Boy on a proper Leidenheimer roll.

Best home-made lunch sandwich is crunchy peanut butter and banana on white toast, with just s slight smear of Miracle Whip.

Ybor style Cubano

Cuban bread, yellow mustard, roast pork and turkey , swiss or provolone and longways sliced dill pickle.

Pressed.

(and don't think of subbing in ham or turkey loaf!)

Another vote for a Cuban, though good ones are hard to find here in barbecue pork land.
Club is another favorite, Logans Roadhouse has a decent one, though big enough to feed two.

Substitute white meat for dark and Davemchine and I are of one mind.

Spearmint's choice sounds delicious as well, but I had one of those about two weeks ago.

the legendary old Hof Brau in Oakland at the corner of Broadway & Grand (R.I.P.) could do no wrong sandwich-wise. served up quality, fresh cooked meats sliced to order on your choice of bread, w/ your choice of trimmings, salads and side orders. a Saturday ritual for the early to mid 1960's after junior league bowling at Broadway Bowl (also R.I.P.) across the street.

Sometimes it is what it is...
and then there's times when it's really better.

Primanti Bros makes the best sandwiches...a Pittsburgh tradition for 60+ years.

"Yinz guys wanna know the real story about the Primanti's sandwich, n'at, right?
Like whose crazy idea it was to stuff a big hunk of grilled meat and chilly cole slaw and hot fried egg and fresh tomato and crisp French fries between two slabs of chewy Italian bread that you could hardly fit into your mouth?"

Muffeletta on a toasted roll. The best I ever had was at Messina's Oyster Bar in New Orleans which may no longer exist. Central Market's were better known but Messina's were the best. Jason's Deli, located in the mid south and south east part of the US, makes a pretty good muffeletta.
