I thought the same thing about Aperture. I ran Photos. Imported my Aperture library. Then launched Aperture only to find that my old library was all gone. Until I looked in the folder where the Aperture library was stored and realized that Photos just renamed my old Aperture library. So when Aperture opened after running Photos, it opened with a blank library.

You can never go back.

Or at least Apple doesn't want you to. Not without a bit of work.

I'm liking Photos so much better than iPhoto, I'm unclear why you would want to go back?

…and yet, it is! You have to be running iPhoto v. 9.6.1.

I can use both Aperture and iPhoto with no problems at all. I do have Photos installed but I don't use it. However, it has been launched more than once.

What problems are you having?

iPhoto (9.4.3) has a "no symbol" over it's icon, if I click it I get this:

when I click the "Search App Store" button I get this:

The point of my post is not whether or not I should use Photos, it's about the fact that iPhoto doesn't work when everything I've read says it should continue to do so.

I don't consider myself a fanboy because I want to use a secure OS.

Steps to update to iPhoto 9.6.1 -> [discussions.apple.com]

Agreed this was poorly implemented by Apple, but probably by design as Apple wants us to keep upgrading...

It was really a hassle to get the latest version of iPhoto. The instructions linked by braveshp should help but if not you can PM me and I'll send a dropbox link with what you need.

One thing I don't like about Photos is how it launches when a memory card is inserted. It isn't controlled by the System Settings like iPhoto was. In the end I had to manually kill Photos background processes, change the permissions on Photos, and then compress it.

Ukulele music I couldn't find anywhere else.

Took me a while but I was able to delete photos and Image Capture. I use Adobe products for handling photos

That won't work as it's not in the Purchases tab of the App Store for me.

You may have to call the mothership and ask nicely for a redemption code. If/Since you have 9.4.3, you should be good to go after you turn on the charm. The code will get you iPhoto 9.6.1 while in Yosemite. Bonus tip; after DL'ing 9.6.1 in Yosemite, iPhoto will then be on your purchases list, and if you go to a Mavs machine, after a couple of dialog boxes bark at you, the App Store will let you DL 9.5.1, which is the max for Mavs... if you try to use 9.6.1 under Mavs, it won't work. As Grim and others note, they don't make it easy. Good luck.

I don't think that I really care to bother with contacting Apple over this since it's been discontinued. I was mostly curious why it wasn't working when it supposedly should have been.
