So, the Internet in parts of California has slowed to dial-up levels.... Mostly MY part.

Apparently, something is going on with AT&T's fiber optic network...
Looks like not only is the WAN for all the schools slowed to dial-up speeds, but some users I've talked to are reporting our only cable-internet provider has done the same.

Some folks here at work were spreading the rumor that it was "nation-wide"... but I'm seeing no evidence of that.

I find it odd that a couple major news outlets have no mention at all of it... but I can't exactly search a lot of news sites, since most of them time out before loading.

Almost like being back on Hughes.net... (sorry... I threw up a little in my mouth for a sec...).

I'd post a link to the outage map at downdetector.com, but they're not loading well right now either...

Here's some news on today's outage

UPDATE, 1:10 p.m.: So we all seem to be consensing on the idea that the fiber was cut, somewhere in Hopland. State Sen. Mike McGuire has tweeted this; Assemblymember Jim Wood’s office verifies it in the LoCO Country Club (below).

But this leaves us with questions. First: What of the other AT&T outages reported elsewhere in the state and nation today? Second, and most importantly: What the damn hell about our redundant fiber? Wasn’t this never supposed to happen ever again?

We have questions in to McGuire’s office and Wood’s office, since they seem to be the people with the most firsthand knowledge of the situation at this point. As yet, we have not heard back. We will tell you what they tell us, if and when we hear from them.

Over the past several months there have been a string of intentional fiber cable cuts in other parts of CA and AT&T even has a reward for info on them.

We've had outages due to our only fiber line into the county (when we only had the one) being cut before.. Now we have two, each one supposed to handle the traffic.

Other thing; our Office of Education reported to me that the whole network they're linked to was down... which extends to the bay area.

Of course, any of these tidbits may be erroneous.

Hmmm...I just lost parts of Boeing's website too. Must be hosted in Long Beach area rather than Seattle.

Edit: It's back now.
Edit 2: And down again...

Sonic (on ATT copper) is no slower than normal.

Don't know if it is related but during the afternoon & evening of Sep 3 several of the 800 numbers I tried to call gave a "Disconnected/out of service" message. All OK now.

It seems there was a slide that exposed the undergound fiber line which was then cut by someone looking for copper wiring.

An AT&T repair worker near the break told the Ukiah Daily Journal on Friday morning that the line was easy to access because it had been raised out of the ground earlier because of a slide in the area and was being held up off the ground by steel posts. He said they believe the vandals thought it was copper wiring — which is valuable these days — and chopped it in half. When they realized it wasn’t copper they just dropped it and left.
