Why isn't my scanner being recognized?
Posted by: freeradical

I get the following error message when I try to use my scanner:

I have tried unplugging and replugging the USB cables at both ends.

I have moved the scanner's connection from a USB hub to a direct connection to the iMac, and on a completely different port from the one the USB hub is using.

The scanner uses some sort of proprietary cable with some kind of barrel like thing (An EMI Filter ?) at the end of the cable, so I haven't tried swapping cables.

I have rebooted the scanner software.

I have shutdown and restarted the scanner.

Does anyone have any other ideas?

Thanks

Have you tried Image Capture to see if it can recognize the scanner? My scanners stopped working with the latest OS update. I use Image Capture now.

You'll at least know if it's software or hardware related.

It's an Canon 9000F, and the power source and USB cable are separate connections. The scanner is powering on.

try a different USB cable. forget about that little thing on the cable, if you have a cable that fits, try it. My dad had a bad cable and he insisted the cable is good and drove me crazy troubleshooting (remotely), until I sent him in the basement looking for a different cable and then printer/scanner worked ever since.

Image Capture is a utility that comes with OS X. It should be in your applications folder.

Try changing the cable. The little barrel thingy is nice but hardly necessary.

I agree with space-time. Try a new USB cable. If the scanner wasn't recognized when you connected it directly to the computer. the cable must be at fault.

Well, it could be that the USB port on the scanner went bad.

Check System Profiler > USB to see what Mac recognizes being connected via USB

Okay, I replaced the cable and it didn't matter. So I decided to reboot the iMac. Now the scanner is recognized. I then replaced the original cable, and it works too.

A Computer Troubleshooter's Manual
1. Check to see that the non-functional device is plugged in.
2. Reboot the computer to see if that fixes the problem.
3. Everything else.

True, but I hate not knowing why something happened. Imagine if the lights on your car were to occasionally fail for seemingly no reason. You discover that shutting down the engine and then turning it back on "solves" the problem. Most people would want to know what's up. :-)

I used to be the same way, but then I started to provide support for Windows. Broke that habit right quick.

It may have been a process 'stepped' on the memory space for one of the several USB extensions. Since the kexts are loaded from the extensions.mkext compressed kext cache, the system wouldn't reload the terminated kext.
Rebooting is the usual solution. Poorly written code; Adobe Flash comes to mind,
are typically the cause.

Apple's engineers work full time to isolate and correct these issues.
If you really want to "know why" it happens, there's a lot of info on Apple's Developer pages.
