syncing issue with iPhone

I don't backup or sync my iPhone very often, but tonight I updated my phone from 7.1.1 to 8.4.1. I backed up, updated, backed up again. Then I updated all my apps (there were about 100 updates needed). Backed up again. Then I hit Sync. It said it had 30 apps to sync. I thought that odd. When it was was done, I decided to try to hit sync again. It said there were 23. WTF? I just synched. Why were there 23 apps more? So I kept hitting sync. It went to 8, then 11, then 13, then 8 again. Seriously, WTF?

I just went ahead and unplugged the phone after that. But why does it keep saying there are apps to sync, right after I just did a sync?

ok, follow up. When I unplugged the phone and turned it on, it had a bunch of messages saying a bunch of apps couldn't be synched. I guess that's the issue. I don't know why they won't sync. There is almost 6 GB free on the phone.

The 'Joys' of modern iTunes.

you need 21 GB for a proper update on iPhone these days.

just joking, but I hate the way iTunes handles iPhones these days.

The new/updated apps get downloaded to your phone before the old ones are deleted. So, you may need several more GB free on your phone than it looks in the summary-window.

In many cases, new apps (with new retina-quality artwork) are considerably larger than the old versions of the same apps. So, whatever your own guesstimate of the room that you need on the phone for the apps, it's probably wrong.

In order to get my apps synced within my lifetime, I've worked out this routine in iTunes: Uncheck the boxes to sync music/tv/movies/podcasts/photos to my phone to free up as much capacity as possible without losing my app-data. Then sync once for the apps, re-check the boxes and sync another time to get the rest of the stuff back onto my iPhone.

FWIW - I'll be in your same shoes in the next week or two as I prepare for a new iPhone.

In the end, I never seem to get a clean sync without some of these issues still outstanding.

Thanks for all the input. When I unplugged the phone, it was showing 24 apps needing updates still. So I did them one by one. I've got 5 left to do, but I'm down to less than 1 GB of free space, and the remaining 5 are all large.

iTunes says half the phone is used by "Other". I remember a thread here recently about cleaning out whatever that is, so I'll be hunting down that thread soon.
