Wrecked my wife's macbook pro
Posted by: goosegunner
Date: September 08, 2015 11:18AM
Last week I spilled a cup of coffee on my wife's 2010 Macbook pro. It was closed but plugged in. It died immediately.

I am looking at buying a used or refurbished one for now to replace.

I found a 2011, can the drive just be changed to simplify the transition or would the old drive be missing files for a 2011 to boot?

I'd think it should work fine. If it's missing something, it would likely just download it from Apple's Floating HQ in the sky.

I think the '11 will work with the '10 drive...

Don't swap the drive, clone it to an SSD. It'll take a bit of the sting out of her loss.

What OS was she running? The Early 2011 can run 10.6, the late 2011 shipped with 10.7, although I'm pretty sure that the 13" late 2011 will run 10.6.8, not sure if the 15" late 2011 will.

A drive transplant would likely work as long as the computer can run the same version of the OS (ie 10.7 for sure, likely 10.6.8 with all updates applied).

With the cover closed, how did the coffee get into the computer?

Oh she knows, so do my kids who are all giving me grief about not doing as I say about liquids near computers. I told them all, "See that just shows how fast accidents can happen"

Of course I didn't have a current backup and of course our checking account is on that computer.

I am pretty sure it was 10.6.8, sounds like the 2011 has 10.7 dvd.

It was a large cup of coffee. I set it down on coaster stack that was uneven and it tipped right on the top of computer. It looks like some ran in the back vent and also hit the power connection.

I have the drive removed, no liquid damage there. I probably should get a external case and just transfer what I need.

Big mess too because we had lots of photos on there that will need to be transferred to different computer which will most likely be a different version of iPhoto. Luckily I do have backups of the Library incase the transfer goes poorly.

The Early 2011s shipped with either 10.6 or 10.7 installed depending on the manufacturing date, but they can all run 10.6 even if they shipped with 10.7.

The Late 2011s only shipped with 10.7, and the 15" has a different GPU than the early 2011, that's why I'm not sure if 10.6.8 will run on it. But the 13" only has the internal Intel GPU and that didn't change from the early 2011, so 10.6.8 runs on it (and I have a late 2011 13" running 10.6.8 as proof).

If you have the salvaged drive in an external case, just try booting from it on the 2011 MBP externally, it will either boot fine or immediately give you a Kernel Panic.

I've transplanted 10.6.8 drives from 2007/2008 vintage Macs to Early 2011 15" MPBs and Late 2011 13" MBPs and they booted up just fine.

The 2011 I am looking at is actually the early one a 2.3 i5, shipped with 10.6.6.

Might be able to get back up and running quickly.

My niece once had me fix up her Macbook because "the cat spilled water in it."

Yes, just transplant the drive and boot, and act like nothing happened. I have at least one spare 10.6.8 capable system in-house so that I can get family members back up and running in under an hour if there's a hardware failure and the drive is still good.

Is it a 15" or 13", you should be aware that there is a repair extension for video/GPU issues on the 15" (and 17") models.

Excellent advice above, I just wanted to add that many of us have been there. I once poured an entire 16 oz large coffee into a work laptop, and was threatened with paying for the repair. I now ONLY use my Contigo no spill , no leak mug near anything electronic. And it's saved my butt innumerable times.

Best of luck !

It is a 13".

I did just find my newer tech adapter. I am going to try and boot my 2009 with the drive and up date the Time Machine drive I had for my wife's 2010.

The Late 2011 15" will run 10.6.8 if you put a drive with 10.6.8 on it, or if you create a 10.6.7 Universal Installer (requires finding a MBP specific 10.6.7 installer and then modifying it to be Universal). There is no retail 10.6.x installer that will work on a Late 2011 15".

I ran 10.6.8 on a Late 2011 15" for quite a while before I finally upgraded to Mountain Lion and then a 2012 15".

Watch out for the 2011 graphics issues.

Thanks, that's good to know that the 10.6.8 updates had support for that model/GPU, it adds another model to my list of 10.6.8 bootable hardware to choose from.

I have my 2009 running off the drive via USB.

I have updated the time machine.

Now to find a replacement.

Was there any problems with the 2011 13" macbook pro video?

No, the 13" doesn't have a separate GPU, it just used the internal Intel GPU.

Watch out for the 2011 graphics issues.

That's only for the 15" MacBook Pro.

The 13" employs a clever design angle to avoid those issues: they leave out the separate gfx chip.

Standard caveat for 2011, didn't notice it was specifically a 13 inch he was looking for.

What about taking to an Apple Store and having them send it out to their repair depot. For a flat charge, I think it is $310, they will replace anything that is needed to make it work again. I've done that a couple of times with my 13" MBP.

I would take it apart first and try to clean and dry it as much as I can, however.

I took it to apple store the check in guy told me it would be $755 to send it away and I should just buy a new one.

I did take it apart and cleaned some of the residue, which was not much. The light on cord did then glow green for a short time but then stopped.

Whatever you decide to do (my vote is for an SSD in a replacement machine), get one of these:

I would call 1-800-SOS-Apple and ask a human about the flat rate repair for an out of warranty machine.

I'm wondering if the mention of Liquid Damage causes the price to change.

I will look into the repair.

Tonight I bought a used 13" mid 2012 tonight. I have it back up and running just as it was before. Well looks the same but much faster.

Does that work for you? the 2012 models don't run 10.6.8.
