Last week I spilled a cup of coffee on my wife's 2010 Macbook pro. It was closed but plugged in. It died immediately.
I am looking at buying a used or refurbished one for now to replace.
I found a 2011, can the drive just be changed to simplify the transition or would the old drive be missing files for a 2011 to boot?

Help you goose, help you. You're going to need it, when she finds out.
I think the '11 will work with the '10 drive...

What OS was she running? The Early 2011 can run 10.6, the late 2011 shipped with 10.7, although I'm pretty sure that the 13" late 2011 will run 10.6.8, not sure if the 15" late 2011 will.
A drive transplant would likely work as long as the computer can run the same version of the OS (ie 10.7 for sure, likely 10.6.8 with all updates applied).
With the cover closed, how did the coffee get into the computer?

I am pretty sure it was 10.6.8, sounds like the 2011 has 10.7 dvd.
It was a large cup of coffee. I set it down on coaster stack that was uneven and it tipped right on the top of computer. It looks like some ran in the back vent and also hit the power connection.
I have the drive removed, no liquid damage there. I probably should get a external case and just transfer what I need.

The 2011 I am looking at is actually the early one a 2.3 i5, shipped with 10.6.6.
Might be able to get back up and running quickly.

The Late 2011s only shipped with 10.7, and the 15" has a different GPU than the early 2011, that's why I'm not sure if 10.6.8 will run on it. But the 13" only has the internal Intel GPU and that didn't change from the early 2011, so 10.6.8 runs on it (and I have a late 2011 13" running 10.6.8 as proof).

The Late 2011 15" will run 10.6.8 if you put a drive with 10.6.8 on it, or if you create a 10.6.7 Universal Installer (requires finding a MBP specific 10.6.7 installer and then modifying it to be Universal). There is no retail 10.6.x installer that will work on a Late 2011 15".
I ran 10.6.8 on a Late 2011 15" for quite a while before I finally upgraded to Mountain Lion and then a 2012 15".

What about taking to an Apple Store and having them send it out to their repair depot. For a flat charge, I think it is $310, they will replace anything that is needed to make it work again. I've done that a couple of times with my 13" MBP.
I would take it apart first and try to clean and dry it as much as I can, however.

I took it to apple store the check in guy told me it would be $755 to send it away and I should just buy a new one.
I did take it apart and cleaned some of the residue, which was not much. The light on cord did then glow green for a short time but then stopped.

I would call 1-800-SOS-Apple and ask a human about the flat rate repair for an out of warranty machine.
