Thanks!

Now I can do some "shopping" while wandering through the airport.

I never lock my luggage, if I have something valuable I take in carry-on.

I use them but only to help keep the luggage zippers from working themselves open. I never believed for a minute that they'd actually keep a bad guy (or gal) away.

first & only time I put one on a checked bag the helpful TSA agent informed me they didn't have the universal keys, so they'd just cut them off anyway.

never bothered after that.

most trips I can manage with only a carry-on.

I use colored zip ties. I at least know someone opened it.

Yes. TSA may have the keys, but seldom use them. At some airports they seem to habitually cut off every lock that they find regardless of whether they're searching for anything.

I did that for awhile, but then they ruined the zipper and sliced open the side of one of my bags when one of them couldn't figure out how to cut a zip-tie.

When they unloaded it at the airport, half the contents of my bag was strewn across the length of the belt and the rest was just missing (mostly dirty laundry on that leg of the trip). TSA kindly put a tag on the bag to let me know that they were responsible and had no liability.

So, now I just cram everything I can into a small carry-on.

Pack and declare a firearm in your luggage. Best way to ensure that your bag doesn't get tampered with.

I do that when I ship photo or video gear. Mentioned here before. .22 LR pistols in each case. They take your stuff directly to the baggage office, and you sign for it AFTER they check claim tags. Never had a problem that way. A photographer friend had a pistol go missing, and they shut down the airport until it was "found" and the video was reviewed. Someone was fired and up on federal charges the next day. TSA and DHS don't screw around when someone is watching after a screw-up.

I go with the colored zip ties as well. Once that luggage leaves your hands there's no way to stop anyone from getting in there. I at least want to know if someone was in there thumbing through my boxer shorts.

Why is that?

Because they'll arrest you for bringing a handgun into New York City as soon as you clear baggage claim, I'm guessin'.

Why would the Feds share that information with a city government?

It isn't their job.

I think if you are transiting through its fine. However, I chose to not visit places that ignore the Constitution.

Information re: firearms; especially handguns, is routinely shared among airport law enforcement. If you are "transiting" through any airport in the state of NY, do NOT accept your luggage back unless you are authorized to possess said firearm in NY. Insist that the carrier safeguard your luggage and that THEY see that said luggage is secured until THEY can legally transfer it to the next flight / carrier (the airline WILL fight you on this and say you have to take your luggage. DON"T). Otherwise, expect to be arrested and charged with unlicensed possession of a firearm in NY (I believe it's Penal Law Section 265).

I know that according to Federal law, there are very limited circumstances in which a private, unlicensed citizen can, in theory, possess a firearm while transiting "hostile" jurisdictions. Most cops don't know these Federal laws and thus will simply arrest you. You (and your attorney) then get to sort everything out well after the fact. Even if you prevail, good luck in getting your property (firearm) returned and, forget about getting reimbursed for your legal expenses.

They opened my luggage last year. I know because they left a long note inside the luggage telling me that they did so. My last flight (the other day) the guy groped me up and down. When I was putting my shoes back on I realized that I still had my belt on which I think triggered it all.

IIRC, a starter pistol which can only shoot blanks and does not fall under the legal definition of firearm is still to be declared to TSA. And they treat it as a firearm. (I seem to remember reading that pro photographers were doing this to protect valuable camera equipment).
