Need new bike tires! Deal recommendations? (to replace 700x38)

Currently: 700x38 Invert 2, on Bontrager Fairlane rims. On a Trek hybrid rescued from the trash some years back.

I ride ~90% city pavement and backstreets, 10% spontaneous mad park turf hill-bombing. Not high-mileage use.

I could appreciate a better set of rubber, but would probably appreciate a really good deal even more. I'm sure any decent set will be a significant upgrade from the crumbly-sidewalls I've been rolling on, probably born c. 1990's.

Definitely time - ok, past due time: The rear one got a tube puncture last week, now a week of riding after replacing the tube, that tire has developed a big prominent ominous-looking bulge (so no mo ridin fo me time bein'...).

amazon is a lot cheaper in this case. just search for "38mm tire" schwinn comes up first. looks like you have some options in the >$20 price range.

Ps. I could have some leeway in tire width and price if it buys something particularly better.

What the heck- just ordered a set of these: [www.performancebike.com]
700x35 Fortè Gotham ST, all of $26 for the pair, +7 sh.
Cheap! and the reviews note their low road roll resistance, handling in the wet, toughness (if a little heavy), and reasonably ok off-road ability. Probably a good balance. Wish I would've gotten around to doing this last month. Hopefully Performance ships (ground) out quick?

Id day get the widest you can -- not sure if they sell 700 x 43s anymore.

Although not much thinner, those 35s you got might have a harsher ride than your old 38s.

Doubt that 3mm will make any discernible difference in feel.

Check if you have any bicycle co-ops in your area, I got an almost new mtb tire from ours for $5.00. I was lucky to already have a newer tube. Riding my old Giant Iguana was getting a bit worrisome with the tires I put on it when I built it, lol.

[www.biketiresdirect.com] has frequent specials.

Maybe. I ride with 32Cs myself, and they seem so much cusiher than the 27s I used to ride on. Only a few MM, but thats 10% of the total width...

I run 26 X 1.25" slicks on my city bike, can really take the sting out of things...

Unless riding very rocky or rutted gravel trails, anything wider than about 35 mm is overkill, plus you pay a weight penalty.

ROLLING back prices! Re: Need new bike tires! Deal recommendations? (to replace 700x38)

Thanks for all the replies.
f/u -Even better. I just went back to read a spec on the tire's page at Performance, and it now offered an additional 20% off the tires I ordered last night. -Called them up, they cheerfully credited me back $5.20, so now I'm at $10.39 per tire +sh, more like garage sale or tube prices!

I wasn't aware of biketiresdirect, looks like they have a somewhat larger selection of tires in 700x3_ range than Performance did (starting w/a cheap Michelin at $13.xx), but their shipping was higher, $10.15 vs $6.99 at Performance.

Good to have choice + cheap.

ps. JDC : the ancient 38's dried-up sidewalls were so threadbare, they probably already had narrowed down close to 35's...
