PSA: Millions of PC users scammed by "Tech Support" calls
Posted by: pdq
Date: October 01, 2015 04:03PM
...says...um...well, Microsoft, apparently. And apparently these estimated 3.3 million users (in the US) will pay a total of $1.5 billion dollars to these guys in 2015.

I know - old news for most of us. But with Microsoft seeing a "huge spike" in these scams, it's worth warning folks you know (especially seniors) about them.

That's a lot of money. Might be time to reassess my career path.

I had one of those calls. It was fun to play with them. They tried really hard to convince me that my installation of Windows was corrupt and had a virus. I spent a few minutes playing along, then explained that I'd evicted Microsoft from my home long long ago.

It has been a couple weeks since the last I got.

I did have fun with one near the beginning of the year. He wanted to let me know how wonderful a system Windows was and why wasn't I running it once I said I had no Windows systems. Kept him going for at least 10 minutes.

as I've said many times, I simply say, "does your mother know that you've decided to become a thief? She must be so proud." Then wait to hear them bursting into tears. So far, they only hang up, but ONE DAY...

Tried that once and was cursed out. Do not get those calls any more since the thieves refuse to leave a message.

Got my first call this morning.

Pathetic, but scary to think that uninformed folks will be fooled.

They actually used Mavis' last name.

Grrrrrrr....

They also do Macs.

I played one along a few months ago, acting as if I was following his instructions. He got confused really fast when I didn't get the results on my screen that his script told him I should get. After about ten minutes he said he'd have to call me back. I never heard from him again. I'm crushed.

My son took one of their calls recently. He messed with them for a while. "Oh no, should I get my dad's credit card"?

I have had fun with them a couple of times. Wasted 30 minutes for their time each time
Last time they wanted me to go to a web site and I told them the link did not work, My browser was giving me a message that the web site was unsecure. They asked me to try again. I told them this time my browser would not connect and there was a message that they were frauds. got a few choice words back from them

I got one of those calls a couple of years ago, obviously from offshore. I intended to string the crook along, but he hung up on me when I couldn't understand him through his accent.
