El Cap Install Hell...

I've been trying to install El Cap on several different disks and a USB drive.

So far, I've only been successful getting on an 850 EVO SSD and a 32G SanDisk Extreme thumb drive.

My problems seem to be two-fold 1) my EVO drive *might* be damaged and 2) I can't copy the Installer.

First off, I'm booted from the SanDisk, and this thing flies. It's a USB3 thumb drive on my 2012 Mini, and it feels as fast as just about any of my SSD. Of course, there's next to nothing on it, though the EC install takes up 20G on a 32G drive. (8G is the sleep image, though.)

I've downloaded the EC Installer several times. *Every* time, I drag it to the desktop to get a copy. Yosemite won't let me move it out of the Applications folder. I've done this with the original download open and closed, but when I launch the copy I get this:

I can't install EC from a copy. Sometimes the original Installer gives me the same greeting as above. The installer that I copied to this thumb did the same thing. The Install to my EVO is borked, and I'm running out of Macs and drives to download to. I downloaded from the 2012 Mini's Yosemite drive and used that to try to reinstall the EVO's OS, and now the Store won't let me download to that drive again.

So as it stands, if I install from the Installer in the App folder, it seems to go OK. If I copy it and try to install from the copy, both files are called corrupt. Coincidence, I hope.

I'm hoping it's just my methodology and that it can be fixed. I'd really like to end up with a reusable installer.

I'm going to try another d/l to this drive, but unless I can move it, it'll just be another disposable installer.

One small oddity/annoyance- my USB thumb drive doesn't show up in the list of devices along with my other USB HDs.

It does show up when it's just a drive o' files and not a boot drive. I see it on the desktop, but not in the window's sidebar.

I wonder if it's not a "removable drive".

RAMmie,

Try creating a disk image from the Installer app in the Applications folder.

It is what it is.

Um, because I wanted to be able to upgrade them to EC, and the easy way to do it was with a thumb drive, but that's not working out for me, so far.

Thanks, N-O, I'll give that a shot.

The disk image is inside the app - right click choose 'show package contents' and copy the installer disk image...

are you by chance copying over a network? Because I noticed recently that everytime I tried to UPGRADE a drive by running the combo updater on a network drive, I'd get a corrupt install. If I copy the updater over the network - same problem, but if I copy to an external drive and carry it to the other computer, it runs fine. Haven't taken the time to troubleshoot yet.

Why?

Ok, it dawned on me that you're probably asking "Why El Cap?"

I have no real answer except that using the Beta, I generally like it and don't have much reason not to. I do prefer the not-as-flat look of Mavericks and will probably keep that on one of my drives.

Oh, geeeze! I forgot all about that. That's how we saved the Installer back when this first started. Ok, I'll give that a shot.

Thanks, hal!

I've used the Beta and GM without any problems.

Copying the dmg didn't work.

Every time I tired to install from any of the dmgs, I got a checksum error.

So there's something wrong with the checksum value between my boot drives and the El Cap downloads. I tried reinstalling in the Recovery and got a window telling me that my Mac couldn't be verified with the Apple Store as an eligible machine, even though it's a 2012 mini.

Then I tried another drive in the Recovery mode and it seems to be updating.

I'll see if it's a light or a pitchfork at the end of this tunnel.

I booted into a problematic Install's Recovery Mode, and downloaded from there.

It demanded my papers, verified my Apple ID and awaaaaaaaay we GO!

A mere hour and 45m later, it boots into El Cap, and everything's coming up roses.

RAMd,

Just zip the installer in place, and it will stay there until hell freezes over. You can also move the zipped file by CMD-drag n drop. You can copy it or the original by Option-drag n drop.
