Kid friendly things to do in New Orleans?
Posted by: pinkoos
Date: October 20, 2015 12:12PM
Thinking about bringing my wife and kids along to a continuing education conference and was wondering what kid friendly things there are to do there?

Last time I went was many years ago.

I know there's the aquarium. What else would be fun for 8 and 10 year old boys?

Thanks.

Audubon Zoo, City Park, Museums, Swamp Tour, Beignets, French Markets, Streetcar tour. There's also an amusement park and large garden railroad in the park but they're only open on weekends.

When we lived there, we'd hit the multiple museums near the Quarter -- the Aquarium of the Americas, and the Butterfly Garden and Insectarium (which is within walking distance). The Audubon Zoo was a regular haunt as well -- there was a lot to do and see there.

Here's a good place to start as well: [www.neworleanskids.com]

What Ralph said.

Not that I'm recommending this, but my teenaged cousins walked me down Bourbon Street and shoved me into one of the strip clubs the first time I went to NOLA. I was about seven. I don't really remember it (honest), but I'm told I struck up a conversation with the bouncer, who was much amused...

There is a house in New Orleans
They call the Rising Sun

... It would be truly educational!

My band is down there every weekend but its an 21+ venue on Bourbon. We do get families that will stand outside the door and watch, though.
Ralph pretty much nailed it.

Since we're getting close to that time...

... but that may be a little too adult for the little kiddies. In fact the adults might likely pee their pants with this too. grinning smiley

But yes, everything that Ralph mentioned is good...

Please see my earlier post... I was just a bit more cerebral in my recommendation.

Only been there once, but enjoyed riding the vintage trolleys, a treat for kids if you come from a place where they don't have any.

Just watching the tugs and barges on the river can be fun, too.

And take in live music outdoors on the streets in the French Quarter—and Jazz Fest, if you're there in the spring.

There are also riverboat tours, which are educational.

Don't have much to add as it's already all been said, but my kids still talk about the New Orleans trip we took during Spring break two years ago. My kids were 6,10, and 12 at the time. We went to the Audubon Zoo, WW II museum, the Insectarium, Swamp tour (go on a weekday -- we went on a weekend, and a lot of boaters were out which scared the wildlife away), Riverboat Natchez (my kids actually didn't like that one, but I liked it), and they LOVED the food and music!

I am just having the first sip of coffee and it hasn't had full effect yet. I read "Kid friendly things to do in Orlando?" and I was like WTF, he never heard of Disney and Universal, Seaworld, Lego, and all the other parks? But then the coffee started working and I realized, wait, it's New Orleans, totally different place, LOL.

The insectarium is amazing. My son wants to go back to New Orleans just to spend more time there. They even have a cafe where you can eat some tasty snacks made from insects.
