AP claims Airbus A 321 crashes at 30,000 feet in Egypt

The reported time lapse between takeoff and loss of contact with the aircraft means that the plane was possibly flying at a cruising altitude of some 30,000 feet when it crashed.

Mr Science guy - the investigative journalist.
Apparently it ran into the sky.

billb, I'm not sure it is a distinction of importance compared to the event itself.

What was "at" 30,000' for an aircraft to "crash" into?

it' amazing just how bad reporters have become. Type something sensational BEFORE they put brain in gear.

Perhaps the aircraft exploded / broke apart while cruising at said altitude and then, crashed to earth?

If that's what happened, it's a tragedy.

The Egyptian officials said the aircraft was cruising at 36,000 feet (about 11,000 meters) when contact with air traffic controllers was lost.

Regardless, such a tragedy. It remains to be seen if it was some sort technical failure on that aircraft or if someone shut it down like that MH flight over Ukraine.

He most assuredly got emails, tweets, interoffice memos and LOL from friends and associates and updated the story as these fast breaking stories often are.

That's why I made a screen grab.

A little funny, not a lot funny and yeah, a tragedy unfolding.

Now it says

The Russian airliner that crashed on Saturday was cruising at 31,000 feet when it lost contact with air traffic controllers, according to Egyptian aviation officials.

Similar to how most American "news" operations report on car/truck railroad incidents.
I never knew locomotives were roaming the country hunting down cars, trucks, & buses to smash to bits.

A train smashed into the rear corner of a silver sedan Friday evening in Loveland, tying up traffic long into the evening hours.

and then, the last sentence of the article:
Additional details about why the car was on the tracks, apparently facing north when it was hit from behind, were not immediately available.

How's about "Car negligently abandoned on railroad tracks..."??

No survivors.

I was a bit surprised to learn that Egypt attracts so many Russian vacationers, about 3,000,000/year.

Germany is #2 behind Russia for tourism.
I noticed lots of menus in restaurants and signs for languages spoken elsewhere were English/German/Arabic especially around Hurghada/Safga/Luxor

Allusions to rebel groups were hinted at this morning as the jet was over a location where they had supposedly shot down a helicopter in the more recent past.

What kind of ground to air missile system might be accessible to rebel groups that might reach over 30,000 feet?

Russians shoot down airliner over Ukraine. 30,000 ft in air.

However, it’s unclear where the separatists may have actually acquired the missile launchers. A Russian news outlet reported earlier this month a group of rebels had seized one surface-to-air platform in Ukraine, but NYU professor and Russian-specialist Mark Galeotti wrote that report was “almost certainly preemptive disinformation.” Galeotti suspects the plane was brought down by a SA-11 “supplied by the Russians.” The U.S. State Department has said before Russia is supplying separatists with heavy weapons.

It could have easily been a bomb loaded onto that plane.

Most likely mechanical issues given how it was flying at the time of losing contact.

The same could be said of 9/11 and other disasters. As a violent species/society/civilization, we reap what we sow.

Supplied by the Ukrainians. Manufactured in Soviet Union, as all Buk missiles were, before the break up.

The only credible report so far come from the BND, the German intelligence agency, the missile was Ukrainian. What is not exactly clear how it got into the rebel hands, was it captured, or did the Ukrainian missile unit defect to the rebel side as some have done in the early days the conflict.

Double-digit SAM (say a Soviet SA-10, SA-20 or so) is about the only thing that could hit a target at that altitude. I'd say it's very unlikely that ISIS could sneak all the apparatus for one of those into Egypt and fire it without being noticed. That missile's the size of a telephone pole, the trucks to support it are multiple and huge, and the targeting radar would set off every RWR for many, many miles around.
