TMobile giving away cell extender, so I chat with ATT, they give one too...

I'm chatting right now with ATT agent. They said they would send me a free cell extender for our house where we have never had a cell signal inside. We get LTE on TMobile. Get this cell extender while you can!

Are you saying that T-Mo is giving away free extenders? My understanding is they charge 300-400 deposit for that.

Is 'cell extender' the same thing as AT&T's MicroCell?

I believe so. I've had my MicroCell for a few years now and it works wonderfully well.

Was hoping it was something new. I have an M-cell and have to restart it every couple of days. AT&T says it's a problem on my internet provider's end. I'm on my 3rd M-cell :-(

Remember that micro-cells need a GPS fix, so the can't be sequestered away from windows.

Guy-what did you say to AT&T? "Hi, TMobile is giving away an extender so can I get one for free, too?" I'll get one too if it's that easy!

Watch those cellphone data caps, too. Using one of these things from either Tmobile or AT&T won't alleviate that, even though you'd also be using your home's ISP.

If I read the ars article right:

The T-Mo unit uses both cellular and WiFi data
Any T-Mo user in range can use the extender
ATT's version allows control of cellular access

Is there a service that allows WiFi calling from a cell phone and doesn't use cellular data? Or minutes?

The article says T-Mo doesn't do well indoors. But I get five dots on my iPM with the 200MB SIM, and only two, sometimes three dots on my ATT 5s.

I wonder if that from a T-Mo tower or if someone nearby has an extender. The 3000' range would easily let me hitchhike off a neighbor. I wouldn't want to be fooled and switch to T-Mo and then they drop them.

I could have really used WiFi calling on Verizon three years ago. The T-Mobile MicroCell would have been enough for me to switch back then, assuming I could have set up a bandwidth limit on the port so no more than one other person could have made a call at the same time. I tried for six months to get Verizon to give me a MicroCell, but even though I had at least one call a week fail, they said I had to pay full price.

I guess that without some pull somewhere, somehow, no matter how much you complain, if there records don't show a problem, no extender for you!

I *assume* they can check performance for your number, in that they know if a call dropped, and if it was at your end or the other.

I'm still tempted to [try to] get an ATT unit to fix the two dots situation. If it's not free, I can live without it.

... The article says T-Mo doesn't do well indoors. ...

There's nothing inherently weak about any of the carriers indoors. The only reason anyone would get a microcell from their carrier is because their home is on the edge of decent coverage, and walking indoors makes it bad enough that it doesn't work well.

Yes, you have to enter the #s that you want to have access into your account. You can do this yourself online.

And they have to be AT&T or compatible phones. I have Straight Talk, but it uses AT&T towers and it does work on an AT&T microcell.

The relative lack of low-band spectrum has been a problem for T-Mo, which is why they're trying to acquire more.

The higher-frequency spectrum, which they operate mostly, has a harder time penetrating buildings, so they are at disadvantage compared to AT&T and Verizon.

I don't see the point of AT&T cell extenders now that iPhones support WiFi calling. What am I missing?
