What's the Best Nail to Hang a Picture on a Brick Wall?

I want to hang a large framed picture on the back wall of our fireplace, which is in an adjacent room. What's the best fastener to use? Some kind of masonry nail (or screw)?

Do you want to put the nail in the brick or the grout? I would likely drill a hole with a masonry drill bit, and then get a nail just big enough that it had to be tapped in.

Since you don't mention the size or weight of the framed artwork you want to hang, there are different sizes of lag shield anchors available that will do the trick. It involves drilling into the brick and tapping in the anchor that will accept a screw or lag bolt. Leave the screw out just far enough to hang the art. If it's really big and heavy, use two about 18" apart. My last studio had rock walls and I used the anchors very successfully for 20 years.

Not sure as between the mortar or the brick. I have one big fat bit that I think is for masonry (about ½"), but that seems like overkill.

mstudio: Painting is not huge, but I will want two screws/anchors.

For a wide picture or object you will need two anchors.
mstudio has it right. We have two block homes and I grew up in another.
Solution is get plastic inserts with screws (kits). Buy a concrete drill the size directions point out.
If you have more fastening to do, I would suggest getting several concrete drills in a pack.
My source is Cripe Distributing. I have no connection other than buying too many industral saw blades etc from them.
Though they are on eBay, I would suggest the website. It's a bit of a treasure hunt, but lots of quality brand products.

Have you looked into 3M picture hanging solutions? No nail necessary and based on the weight of your picture, they could work for you.
