REGION FREE hack:

1. open the disc tray
2. on your remote control press "7, 8, 9, ok, 0"
3. keep repeating this sequence till you see the number "0" (for region free) on the bottom left of the screen (it took me 4 times the sequence 7,8,9,ok,0 till it showed the 0)

Your dvd is now region free!

Better yet if you "downgrade" the firmware to an erlier version your machine is now macrovision freee!

I picked one of these up a few months ago when they were on sale at my local Target for $42 and change.

Plays everything I have thrown at it even those pesky video files that my Mac just kind goes ??????? at, burn the file to a cd and pop it in the player and viola!

True. . .but I got mine about a year ago and it came Macrovision free. . .don't upgrade to the latest firmware or it will not be macrovision free.

there are a few Refurbished units for $40 on Amazon... wonder how much shipping costs.

Ken (or anyone else), anyone know:

1) How to check what firmware you have? (And which firmware versions correspond to which ones have Macrovision, etc.)

2) If have a later firmware version, possible to downgrade the firmware, and if so, how?

3) Where to get the firmware updates?
