"You need to restart your computer"
Posted by: clyde
Date: December 08, 2015 07:13PM
Twice in the last hour a veil descended over the iMac screen display. A message in screen center said "You need to restart your computer." The display was frozen; nothing could be done.

I shut it down, then restarted.

Seems to work ok otherwise. What should I check?

Model Name: iMac
Model Identifier: iMac9,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 2.26 GHz

The Colonel has arrived...

Look in the Panic Log in the Console and it may shed some light on the problem. It is usually misbehaving hardware (hopefully external)

Just searched Finder Help—no result for Console…

Where's the Console?

Nothing external was turned on when these two shutdowns were required.

1-type Console in the Spot light (menu far, NOT in Finder). It should be the first one.

If not, go to Applications -> Utilities and it should be in there.

Found a couple pages of messages; here are a couple samples:

12/8/15 5:06:45 PM com.apple.WindowServer[73] Tue Dec 8 17:06:45 kens-iMac.local WindowServer[73] <Error>: kCGErrorFailure: Set a breakpoint @ CGErrorBreakpoint() to catch errors as they are logged.

"12/8/15 5:06:53 PM com.apple.launchd.peruser.501[100] (com.apple.ReportCrash) Falling back to default Mach exception handler. Could not find: com.apple.ReportCrash.Self"

I have no clue what to do, though.

I think you want to find the very end of the boot cycle and look at the last few messages before the time gap. That said, I've never personally found anything of use there in your situation.
Can you say more about what OS you're using and whet you're doing when the KP hits?

What BSD process was identified in the panic log?

Black: OS 10.6.8. Was using word processor and Mac Mail.

Onamuji: Quick look doesn't show BSD process

saw 12/8/15 4:37:42 PM com.apple.launchd.peruser.501[100] ([0x0-0xd80d8].com.apple.mail[1522]) Exited: Killed

there are a couple other entries: launchd.peruser.501[100] ([0x0-0xd80d8].com.apple.mail[1522]) Exited: Killed

Original hard drive? Have you verified/repaired/checked its health?

HD is original; I'm original owner

The volume iMac HD appears to be OK.

A lot of "permissions differed"

Repaired disk permissions

Repair disk grayed out

And the mac has been in steady use? Got a backup scheme in place? HDDs add in random corruption when they're working normally....much more so when they're approaching end of life.

Open the Console app and look for a system diagnostics log indicating a "panic."

The items of most interest in the panic log are going to be the active BSD process and the kernel extensions/modules in the backtrace.

Something is amiss for it to happen twice.

Reboot in Safe mode. Hold the Shift key down at startup sound until you see the progress bar. When you get to the log in screen, select "restart" and just let that happen. Booting in Safe mode does a "Repair Disk" during the boot process without going through the Recovery Disk to do it.

Then, If you have it, boot into another HD and run Disk Warrior (5.0 or at least 4.4) on the HD that misbehaved.

Onamuji: There might be a panic, but I didn't see one

modelamac: I'll do the reboot and run DiskWarrior 4.4

As the fat lady said—Thanks for the tips, guys!

Did safe reboot—holding Shift key during startup
Did restart, also while holding Shift key
Rebooted from external HD
Rebuilt iMac HD with Disk Warrior 4.4

Was that the right order of events?

Did I forget anything?

Right.

Did restart, also while holding Shift key

Restart, but don't hold the shift key. I don't think doing two Safe Boots accomplishes anything, but it doesn't hurt. You want to reboot into your normal OS environment.

Doing a Safe Boot first is good, because it may fix something that DW can't and might stop DW's progress.

I have no idea if this fixes your problem.
