DLP forever!

I just replaced my DLP TV's failing DMD (the thing that makes the image). I used an online guide. No more difficult than replacing a CPU. I'm probably the only forumite still using DLP. I'm shocked by how much better the picture looks. Guess I can hold out until 4k sets are well established. Yay.

Better than what? I love my Panny plasma - it will be with me until OLED is perfected and cheap and 4K content is commonplace.

It is what it is.

As I understood it, for projection TV's and front projectors, DLP is the best image quality you can have (as opposed to an LCD based projection/projector). Plasmas provide the best picture for a flat panel TV, but like all flat panels, there are size/cost limitations over 80 inches.

The DMD was failing; I meant relative to before I did the repair! Not other sets.

We are still using our 67" Samsung LED DLP and it works great!

Of course, those 4K HDR sets are looking real tempting...

Mine's LED, too. I figure they should burn another 11,000 hours or so!

Other than that pesky rainbow in the whites if you are one of the people who can see them. Most newer DLP sets eliminate the rainbow effect for 99% of the population, but there are still those that can see them.

Yeah, that's due to the color wheel in single chip systems. More expensive DLP systems use 3 DMD's (one for each color) to get around this (I think movie theatres and very well heeled home theater setups utilize such systems). LCD based systems have 3 LCD's, 1 for each color.

LED driven DLP's don't have rainbows, there's no spinning wheel. Mine doesn't, at all. I've watched old color wheel based DLPs - I see rainbows every now and then. They're not bothersome to me.

It's one of the benefits often mentioned over old lamp/wheel based DLPs. I'm pretty sure most DLP projector are LED based nowadays. Evan on older systems, I only see rainbows seldomly, and only when the TV is in my peripheral vision.

I have a good friend with his DLP. He's been hoping it'd fail so he can upgrade, but it keeps chugging along...

My Mitsubishi DLP is still going strong, and I get new bulbs on Amazon for $25.00 when I used to pay about a $150.00 a bulb. The picture is good so I don't see why I should spend a bunch of money on a LCD that won't look that much better. When I got my DLP they were on the way out, the next year you didn't see them in the stores anymore.

Be careful, cheap bulbs tend to blow out quickly. Expensive bulbs are expensive because they last.

Congratulations on saving old iron.

It's a shame to have to toss something because of an expensive repair.

I've never see an LED DLP. I stopped looking at DLP because of the moire patterns, and didn't know that's been cured.

I forgot to mention - DLP won't burn in, ever, no matter how long a static image is displayed. It's handy for video games and the like.
