Okay, it appears that the added hyphen between the colon and the close parens makes it text.
So equals text, and without the - equals I'm betting the same holds true for the wink ;)

It's always been a feature of Phorum (well, at least in Phorum 5)

It's turned on at the admin controls. Same thing for some HTML stuff, list length, ect.

I'm sure you already actually know this... but here goes anway...

It makes the difference between;
"You DICK!" (expression of anger, contempt, etc)
and
"You DICK! " (mock expression of anger, done in humor).

There are forums that have DOZENS of "custom" little smiley-cons that get really annoying..
But a here and there is (in my opinion) a useful tool for avoiding misunderstandings in a text based world.


It's tough for me to break the habit of including a nose on my smileys though...
