garage band - does not have permission to save fie

My son is home for the holidays and using my MBP 2010 running 10.6.8 to record some tracks to an external drive. The external drive is a cross formatted USB3 that he had saved to previously. It now says he does not have permission to save the files. Info says he has read write priveliges (logged in as me). Do you think this could be an issue with with formatting or maybe just buggy software? A quick search doesn't bring up much. TIA.

Is "ignore ownership" checked in Get Info for the volume?
