A senior friend I recently switched over to Mac OS, is looking for a Finance / Money management app. I had downloaded one of the free apps I saw when I set up her "new" iMac but, she is not happy / comfortable with it ( I don't remember which free app I downloaded for her). Years ago, she used (and got comfortable with) Quicken on her WinXP machine. She does not remember which version of Quicken she had. I see Quicken 2116 for Mac costs ~ $75 and, I realize that the current Mac version could be significantly different than whatever vintage Quicken she had used. I'd hate to have her spend $75 just to find out that, 2116 Quicken for Mac will be totally different and therefore, she'll have to learn it from scratch (if it will be necessary to "start over" I thought there might be a good app for less money). What financial ~ money management apps do forumites use and like? Any you'd recommend she avoid? TIA!

PS: the iMac came running Yosemite. I plan on upgrading her iMac to El Capitan later this month when I have a couple of hours to spare.

The current iteration of Quicken is nothing like the Quicken of old. Also, it is a buggy POS. Much better to go to Moneydance than to descend into the depths of quicken hell IMO.

I tried Moneydance after dumping Quicken, but ended up with iBank. Regardless, either one is better than Quicken

After Quicken became a mess, my wife did not like Moneydance, and is now using Ms. Finance. I did buy Quicken 2015 again when I saw a deal, but we haven't set it up. I think I might do it myself and compare the two.

I've tried about all of them, but to me the older Quicken, about 7.xx (?) has been good. I own MoneyDance, LiquidLedger, even Account Edge (use that for more heavy duty accounting), but those older versiins of Quivken were the best for me. But downloading your bank statements is a problem with old versions. Intuit needs to really put some time into Quicken. Knuckahaided company.

I am still using Quicken 2007 for Lion and it has the classic (tens of windows) interface.

Also still using Quicken 2007. I tried their Essentials and went back to 2007 when a compatible version was available. My requirements are simple, track income, expenses and assets so I know where the money is going and coming. I started with Dollar & $ense.

Quicken 2007 is working just fine for me with El Cap. Sure the interface is outdated, but it still downloads from my credit cards and investment accounts. Honestly, I would still recommend it as the best Mac option.

Quicken 2015 Version 2.5, 2.5.2, 2.5.3, 2.8, 2.8.2 during the last 4 months trying to get things to be accurate.

I have had over 10 long chats and phone calls to the Phillipines and USA over ONLINE Balance problems, and errors stating that a checking account is DEAD.

Quicken now offers free tech support, but you get what you pay for.

I have 2015 and 2016 for Mac. Havent tried to install the Mac 2016 version as I only am running 10.7.5, and 2016 says it needs ....? 10.10 ?

So I have been following the threads on quicken support, and I can see mine from 8 months ago, and the problem I was asking is still unsolved. I do a SYNC all accounts and the online balance says something from an earlier time. THen if I do SYNC selected account, the ONLINE balance will be correct.

I use Moneydance 2014 as my primary personal finance app. The only thing it lacks is a reconciliation report and the publisher itself is rotten. Other than that, it's a great application.

I tried Moneydance 2015 but the publisher changed the color scheme of the interface and took away the option to modify the colors and the application was rendered unusable. It caused a huge uproar. Rather than restoring the previous color scheme or restoring the ability to change the scheme, the publisher offered a "high contrast" option. It's still horrid. So, I refuse to upgrade back to it.

Truth to say, the only reason I stay with Moneydance is because it's 100% cross-platform. If that wasn't a key feature, I'd've jumped ship to a different application after the release of Moneydance 2015. There are a ton of solid alternatives to Quicken and Moneydance, i.e. iBank, Moneywell, Liquid Ledger, Money, etc.

I still use Quicken 2007 for a few tasks because it's the only personal finance application that offers a reconciliation report. It's a great report and my accountant relies on it. I don't know why Intuit itself removed it from newer versions of Quicken and why the other publishers refuse to provide the feature. But, Quicken 2007 has it and the app still works under Yosemite and El Capitan. So, I'll stay with it for now.

Personally, I'm not concerned about having a finance application access my financial accounts and download data. I never used the feature before and, in this day and age of data insecurity, I wouldn't use it now. It doesn't take long to enter transactions manually. Or, if I know I have a large number of transactions to enter, I can download the data as a Qif or tab-delineated text file via a secure connection and import the info.

I've been using Moneydance for about 8 years, mostly the 2010 version. It's fine, although I don't ask much of it.
