CCC questions

I am cloning a 128 SSD to a 256 SSD, via USB 2.0 and it seems the task is about 75% done, but there is still a lot of data to copy. The progress bar doesn't seem to be linear, is it?

or maybe the progress bar is proportional with the number of files, and there lots of small files and now at the end it got to movies and pictures, which are large files, and it seems it slowed down quite a bit. I was worried that it may reach 100% and only copy ~40 GB of data.

The progress bar in CCC is kind of weird.

It shows how far along its gotten alphabetically from the root of the drive.

Since "Users" appears towards the end of the alphabet, it looks like it's almost done when it hits that point, but usually the Users folder is the biggest one on the drive with potentially hours of copying to do once it reaches that point.

makes perfect sense Doc! neither of my guesses were correct, it is not the number of files, not the amount of data copied, but the letter of the alphabet. Who could have guessed?

There's a reason we don't see progress bars as much as we used to.

??? I think I see progress bars on all OS X installs, even in iOS, when I update iOS or Firmware in OS X, I always see progress bars, and in iOS when I download Apps I see a pie chart filling up.

Love CCC but the only thing the progress bar is good for is letting you know something is still happening.

It is not linear. It is dependent upon the number & size of files. The progress bar will not progress uniformly.

This is my experience - and my take on the progress bar. So long as it keeps moving, I don't take any stock on using it as a time estimate.

Did I say they don't exist anymore? No. They have largely been replaced with things like animations, spinners... or other things where users are less likely to make the assumption that it's linear.

So, it's going by number of files remaining instead of the size of the backup-job remaining.

That explains why it's always misleading when you try to use the progress bar to make a time-remaining estimate when it hits the Users folder.

Fewer files in the Users folder, but on average considerably larger. Might have hundreds of thousands of files outside of the Users folder and only tens of thousands in the Users folder (with caches, emails, etc.)... Makes it look like there's almost nothing left to copy when there may be hundreds of GB remaining.
