Yep! However, one reason it was going to be retired was the new anti-aircraft weapons being developed that were more powerful. Some shoulder fired launchers now have enough firepower to do serious damage to A-10's so they are becoming more vulnerable.

I love the A-10 and am glad she lives on.

I'm not happy to hear that they're now vulnerable from some shoulder-fired weapons. I did not know this, but it was inevitable.

Hog drivers know this going in. All I can say is good hunting.

The A-10 pilots know the increased vulnerabilities going in, but also know they are safer than the chopper pilots. The A-10 has better armor, and is quite a bit faster than the attack choppers, so still remains much more survivable in the close support role.

The titanium bathtub they sit in is the key. And why in the world would you risk an F-35 when you have "paid for and fully amortized" A-10s just sitting around. With a far superior gatling cannon. An F-35 burps once or twice, and is out of ammo. 4 seconds of firing time. The A-10 has 16 seconds of ammo. Multiple fire missions can be flown.

All that's a given and one of the big reasons the AF got the role of CAS over the Army.

I'm just remarking that as safe as they are, they're apparently not quite as safe as they were, even sitting in a 1200lb Ti bathtub.

That's some righteous REMF thinking, right there.

That, not so much. The best tool for the job should be the rule, not the exception.

Keep an eye on the budget. No armor on the Hummvees, etc., will save some bucks.

The question is; is the amount of armor you can put on a Humvee for $50,000 actually going to stop anything and provide any real protection, AT THE EXPENSE of being able to put more money into medical care?
(and I am not making a statement, I'm asking a question... just like everyone should, instead of going off the deep end on an emotional "they're denying the troops the best protection available!" rant. Sometimes, things are just not that useful - they just sound good.).

And congrats to the Warthog Drivers and the troops they support! The A-10 is getting long in the tooth, but is still a mighty useful part of the toolkit!
