Mini in for surgery...again

Had the logic board replaced last year due to video issues. In for service again with DIFFERENT video issues. Awesome.

Then the guy tells me that one of the hard drives is failing as well. Yeesh!

The best part is the video problem is VERY intermittent. And it doesn't show up as a problem on their little tests. At least it didn't last time. Almost like you have to see it and then run the test while it's happening.

Is that the little rectangle of flickering on a monitor which can be "erased" by moving a window over that spot? On a 2012 Mini? Now that you mention it, I haven't seen that problem on my 2012 Mini (which showed it, my other one doesn't) at least since November and maybe earlier. Running OS 10.11.2 here.

That's it. I hadn't seen it since I upgraded to EC so I was hopeful. Alas, it reared it's head again the other day.

You posted a video you took of the problem before, IIRC. That might help at the Apple Store even if it doesn't show the video problem while you're there.

Funny you mention that. They would not allow me to email the links to them. NOR were the links added to the support ticket as the phone support person said they would be. They would NOT even look at the video. Why? B/c it could be anyone's computer!

Seriously? WTF! What could I hope to gain by FAKING a video problem? A new logicboard? It would be the same as the one in there so no benefit there. What else? Why would I be gaming the system???

Sorry. That just really pissed me off.

That's odd - I recently took a mbp with video issues in and they asked if I had pics or video of it. They could have used it he said.

Arg, frustrating. Based on hal's experience maybe tyou can get a different person this time who's more amenable to <cue important sounding voice> indisputable video evidence.

The external video on this MBPR has an intermittent problem that is like a disease - it starts occasionally, then starts to get more frequent. It just stops properly connecting to external monitors.

I've had the problem appear now twice - and both times, a logic board replacement fixed it to tolerable levels. The last time, the repair was handled from an Apple recall.

When it starts to happen again and out of warranty, I think I'll just turn this into a laptop-only machine. I use this for presentations, so there's no way I can have one with poor external video.

But Apple's sure had a tough time with bad graphics in their machines - Santa Rosa laptops, these 2012/2013 machines, the 2012 Minis...

Yeah. I thought it was weird. Especially b/c that's the entire way they knew there was an issue the IFRST time. I actually FILMED a video with my video camera b/c I had to leave it pointed at the screen for a LONG time to get it "trip the problem". And that helped them immensely.

But that is what they told my wife. She took it in for me as I was in a meeting. I even wrote her a script of all I had done and my conversation with phone support and the videos etc. After I knew she was there for the appt, the minute i saw her name pop up on my phone in the meeting I thought "oh crap".

Oh. And one more thing. Can a disk fail and still show a good SMRT status? I only ask b/c I was surprised when he told me my drive was dying. SMART reporter had not popped up anything about that.

Yes, I've seen this many times. I've needed to recover data from failing HDs using DiskWarrior and I run it's Smart test which says it 'passed,' just like Disk Utility will do.
