ok, when did routers get so expensive?

when I was not looking, apparently.

there would only be two machines at one time on the network, and the service is about the slowest Comcash allows us to have, so my needs are modest. however, it must work with a SB6141 modem.

best, cheapest router available?

Do you do any file transfer between machines? If not, then you don't need more than an N router, that is plenty fast. Any Asus on sale at NewEgg will do. I got some decent ones for $10-20 after a small rebate.

Nope, not a recent trend. First Airport Base Station was $300 retail.

The high end consumer routers today are about the same price, but many great options between $100-$200. Some decent ones at sub $100 prices. Do you need AC? Just sharing Internet? Get an older, but higher end N900 on sale for like $50-$60. Or price out the budget AC routers.

T-Mobile customer? See if they are still selling their Asus AC1900 router for $100.

How far apart are these machines? If they are close, pretty much any basic router will do.

Where are you looking? There was a refurb 802.11ac at Newegg for $30 3 months ago (currently $40).

I think the most I ever paid for a router was about $40.

Find a deal on slickdeals for an Asus (or Netgear) router that is around your budget.

I bought a WRT-54G years ago for $40ish. My last router I got a couple years ago and spent $180. I hope it works fine for 10 years. The main reason I needed to upgrade was more power so I could drown out all of the neighboring networks.

I agree they've gone up. Just wasn't getting from which planet the "many great options between $100 and $200" came from.

Like others have said, there are plenty of options in the sub-$50 category. I'm using 2 Asus models right now...both were bought from Newegg at different points in the past 2 years. Actually, both were $20 /each after rebates, but the one I got most recently is more commonly available for around $65 or so.

Both do what I need them to do, so I don't see the need to spend $100+ at this point for a router. Of course, I don't care about the absolute fastest or newest WIFI protocols, and the two I have work great.

Top of the line consumer routers are $250-$300. Lot of great options covers the not top of the line, but still power user models. Feel free to work downward from there.

Even if one is willing to shell out the big bucks for one of those TOL routers, it's better to wait, or risk getting cut by the bleeding edge.

Both the hardware and firmware take time to stabilize, and on some models, it never really does before support wanes.

One can get a good AC router for ~$100 or less.

What does that have to do with this thread?

It's in the OP. Subject, "ok, when did routers get so expensive?" First line of the original post, "when I was not looking, apparently." Someone else posted the reason was AC, so I mentioned the original 802.11b Airport router was $300 retail 16 years ago. I also mentioned that even though modern consumer routers can cost over $200, there's a ton of good models in the $100-$200 range. The implication, I wouldn't price anything over, in fact, I wouldn't suggest crossing $150 for most people.

Then you didn't understand why someone, me, would suggest there are a lot of great options in the $100-$200 price range. Which is why I restated that the top of the line for consumer routers is north of $200. However, lot of power user models in next tier downwards so it makes sense to start there, in the middle power user section. Once you know the sweet spot, you can figure out what features are commanding that middling premium and work backwards. My original suggestion was about $60 for a good N router instead of $50-$60 for a bad AC router.

Why I just rehashed a thread that was pretty straightforward? No idea, must be the snow day. So far, I've napped and watched the snow. Yay! smiling smiley

Seriously? 3 sentences in the OP and you couldn't quote the last?
<best, cheapest router available? >

Clearly the OP is asking about the most expensive routers available.

Uh, right, but if you scroll up before your first post, you'll see I already answered the cheaper router question in addition to the subject header question. I reread the thread and still see the time stamps on the posts and the words I typed seem to make sense. smiling smiley smiling smiley

Again, my answer of the general suggestion for a cheaper router -- a formerly near top of the line N router for about $60ish would work great.
