Traveling to Baltimore Friday...coming back to Philly on Sunday...

Hi,

Not sure if we count any Baltimore denizens among our ranks.

I live in Philadelphia, and am planning to drive down to Baltimore this Friday with my daughter and a friend of hers so that they can attend "Animore" (an anime and cosplay convention) at the Hyatt Regency at the Inner Harbor.

I'm expecting to hit some snow on the way down (we should be leaving Philly around 4 pm...I'm hoping that the heaviest snow won't start until after we arrive (which will hopefully be 6:30 or so)), but am more concerned about our ability to get on the road to head back home on Sunday.

The convention ends at 4 pm on Sunday, so we'd be on the road between 4 pm and 5 pm. How likely is it that the roads to get me from the Hyatt to 95 north will be passable by then? I realize this in part depends on when the snow actually ends.

Just hoping you can give me opinions based on other occurrences of significant snowfall in the area.

Thanks!

How could you not know by now that $tevie is a denizen of Baltimore?

It is what it is.

It already snowed a bit, nothing major. A dusting, but it was still snowing last I checked. Not sure if this bodes well or not for travel. Could be some major snow coming down.

Ps I don't live in Baltimore, but about half way between Baltimore and DC.

As of now, 10"-15" of snow is predicted for the Baltimore to Philly corridor by Sunday. I'd say stay home, or if that isn't possible, take the train. And keep track of Animore-it may be closed. The East gets nuts when a winter storm hits...

Stay home. I lived in Baltimore for almost 8 years. One inch of snow can close everything.

All predictions say much more.

Schools in many counties delayed or closed today with a dusting. If it's worse Friday, watxh out.

According to Animore's FB page: "I'm just saying wait till last minute to decide on anything because either way, the convention is still being held if it does snow a lot and there are no refunds within 30 days."
(The person who posted this has some idea that our expected snow has been downgraded, no idea where they got that from. But the part I quoted is the pertinent information).

While it is true that Baltimore totally freaks out in the snow, the Convention Center is in the main part of downtown, near the stadiums and the casino and the freeways, so the snow will be cleared off from that area long before we residents see any plows. If the predictions are accurate, although I'm not saying to bet the farm on that, the snow will fall after you arrive and will have stopped for long enough for cleanup to have occurred where you will be. I'm usually the one to boost taking a train when possible but in this case, since the BCC is not near the station and you'd need to find a cab in the snow, it might be six of one half a dozen of the other.

Ok, this storm is starting to sound "real" sad smiley

From the Weather Channel
"Blizzard warnings have been issued for the Baltimore and Washington D.C. metro areas, and blizzard watches extend northward to the Philadelphia and New York City metro areas as Winter Storm Jonas begins to take shape. The storm is expected to deliver heavy snowfall to at least 15 states, and heavy ice accumulations, strong winds and coastal flooding will add to the storm's impact as it carves a path from the nation's heartland through the South and onward to the East Coast now through Sunday.

As of Thursday morning, just over 73 million people – or roughly one in every four Americans – were covered by either a blizzard watch, blizzard warning, winter storm watch, winter storm warning, winter weather advisory, or freezing rain advisory from southeast Nebraska to the Carolinas to the New York City area."

With any significant snow DO NOT take the train/cab. You will find no cabs at your destination. And then you are REALLY screwed.
If you don't have a 4WD vehicle, maybe rent one for the trip?

Well, now, I'm beginning to think that unless you are up for an adventure (in other words, staying in Baltimore an extra day or two) that you may want to rethink this. I knew it was predicted to be bad when I posted -- but since then I have seen that it is officially predicted to be a blizzard and the governor has declared a state of emergency.

I would stay home. Here a foot of snow, let alone blizzard conditions, would mean the schools would be closed. Two feet of snow and everything would close, especially with blizzard winds. And any ice means power outages.
