Peter Gabriel CD recommendations?
Posted by: Lizabeth

Heard his "Book of Love" song on the Shall We Dance? soundtrack. (Great movie for Valentine's Day BTW - with a single rose perhaps?)

Looked at his website for his other music but was wondering if anybody had a favorite.

Picked up Scratch My Back at the library last night but that's him doing other people's songs.

TIA

This one.

Solsbury Hill still gives me chills.

And a few of the early Genesis albums when he was still with the group. There was a major shift when he left.

Peter Gabriel I, II, and II and So are considered by many fans I know as his best.
I'm not at all familiar with the tune you mentioned. The LP its' from is mostly covers.

The 1st 3 are very different from So, which is, I'd say the most commercial popish.
Preview some bits on Amazon or allmusic.

Peter Gabriel Plays Live. It's a two disk set.

"So" (fifth album), III (melt), II (scratch), I (car), IV (security), Genesis - "Lamb Lies Down on Broadway", "Selling England by the Pound".

These seven albums give a good representation of Gabriel in his prime.

His first four solo albums were self-titled, the parentheses represent the covers, except for IV(Security) which the label tried naming as such.

Greatest hits compilations seem wrong for an Artiste like PG.
I'd vote for "So."

Also, the Peter Gabriel: Secret World Live DVD or Blue Ray is a great visual experience along with a lot of good performances. I've seen the DVD for $8 and change at Target.

Bernie, do you know Scott Miller, musician and cattle farmer from your neck of the woods.
His farm is around the corner from Taylor and Boody Organ Builders.

Thanks! I'll see what the library has first smiling smiley

The buyers there have been constantly amazing me with the depth and breath of music and books. (Almost, they don't have any Good Rats albums, but I wasn't expecting them to have any...)

BTW listening to Don Henley's Cass Country - nice...

To follow up on my agreement of the recommendation of Secret World Live, I saw that tour (but not the specific show that was taped). Easily one of the top 5 concerts I've ever seen. I also saw PG on the So tour, and on a tour called WOMAD (World of Music and Dance). So tour was good, not great. On the WOMAD tour, PG was ok, but my buddy and I both agreed that Midnight Oil blew everyone off the stage.

I don't think so. My days of going out at nights to check the music scene have been reduced to nill. I work second shift. I do know that neck of the woods.
Tell Scott I functioned at the Junction. That will get him started.

I never understood why Shaking the Tree didn't include "In Your Eyes."

I would think that many would consider that song one of his greatest hits.

For a Valentines vibe, check out New Blood for the orchestral versions of some songs. I used the orchestral instrumental version of In Your Eyes for my wedding.
