High-quality bed sheets
Posted by: rjmacs

Hi all,

I'm in the market for new bed sheets, and am here to solicit your advice & opinions... Here's what I'm looking for:

100% cotton
Heavy weight/good thread count
Not "sateen" or any other shiny weave - I have a strong preference for simple weave/percale
Durable
White

I consider good bed sheets to be an investment, so I don't need the cheapest choice, but I'm also not made of money. I don't mind sheets that feel a bit rough on purchase, and get softer with wear & washing. I launder my sheets weekly.

Where to buy? Any reliable sources/brands? In the past I've used Overstock, but I'm skeptical of their options lately. Thanks, MRFers! You always have great suggestions.

rj,

What season? I like flannel sheets in the winter and regular sheets the rest of the year.

I'm a plain/regular sheets all year person. I adjust blankets/comforters/quilts by the season, but i need my crisp cotton sheets every night.

we love the sheets that we bought from Lands End probably about 7 years ago. Don't remember exactly what we got, but they have held up very well.

The sheets we have bought at Costco have been very nice, but I don't know what kind they are offering right now.

I also like Fieldcrest sheets. I have a set that I got at Target years ago that are soooo soft and just get softer.

Macys Home collection. watch for sales... all the big holiday weekends.

Can go up to $100 per sheet -- not set -- depending on bed size. Ours lasted almost 10 years.

Costco usually has some decent ones. At BB&B you can sometimes score big on their clearance racks, plus they plenty of discount coupons. The Marshall's, Ross, TJ Maxx, Tuesday Morning type places can also be good. Amazingly, we've gotten a few quality sets from Yugster deals; but the really good ones have sold out quickly. We usually have 3 or 4 sets in the rotation, so they have a chance to rest for a few weeks in between uses, and seem to last longer that way. Good luck.

I was going to suggest Marshalls or Ross, nice sheets with a high thread count at a discount. I go by feel, so ordering online doesn't work for me.

Marshalls/Home Goods/Tuesday Morning was going to be my suggestion, too.

My absolute favorites come from The Company Store. Not cheap but truly awesome.

Seconding The Company Store percale sheets. They have some new pima percale sheets that I'm sure are amazing but I don't need new sheets. I love Costco but their sateen sheets are slippery and not my favorite. They are inexpensive (relatively) and come with four pillowcases, which is awesome, but they are my third choice to my Company Store sheets. My first choice is a random organic sheet set I got from West Elm years ago that was promptly discontinued. I have been trying to find an equivalent substitute for years with no luck. The closest were the organic sheets at Target, but they're not quite the same.

What's the issue with slippery sheets?

Lack of traction?

Yeah, pillow slips all over so traction is an issue but the Costco ones are also mysteriously cold, like the opposite of flannel sheets. They just don't feel soft exactly, they are slick. Over time they haven't gotten softer, either.

JDC<

I had bad luck with sheets from Macys. Lots of pilling and they shrank. I can't remember which specific type of Macys sheets so I can't avoid them. Easier just to buy sheets from a different vendor and not worry about it.

Happened to me too.

I bought a car from Germany once, lots of breaking down and expensive to fix. I cant remember which specific type of car it was. Easier to just buy cars from Japan now and not worry about it?

Dillard's often has sheets on sale.

There are lots of sheets on ebay but I don't know anything about the quality or value.

Two good reasons, thank you.

I will say, the coldness is a boon during the summer months. I don't like how slick the sheets are, though.
