We have a decent high-end queen size Beautyrest bed that Mrs. Buzz doesn't find as comfy as our mega-splurge adjustable bed w/ the latex pillowtop mattress. It's my contention that a 3 inch natural latex medium firm mattress topper will make her like the Beautyrest just about as much as the latex pillowtop. She seems skeptical. Kinda hard to find an actual store that has natural latex toppers available for demo purposes. I've tried to explain that what she thinks she likes about the pillowtop, is essentially what she'd be getting with a latex topper. Any real life latex topper users out there that can share their experiences? We've been using a memory foam topper on it for the last couple of years, and she's a bit of a "lumper", so is inclined to think all toppers are the same.

I'd rather throw $350-400 at a latex topper than spring for a whole new bed.

Latex bed person here. As long as your bed provides a firm, even foundation (no sagging or body impressions to overcome), a latex topper will make a big difference and could give your bed a total makeover. Keep in mind that latex can sleep a little hotter than a traditional mattress and it's hard to pin down the differences between firm/medium/soft for different companies in addition to dunlop vs talalay.

Both my kids have 1" latex toppers on their Ikea twin mattresses. Since I lay on them every night to put them to bed, I actually know how nice they are! We have a more expensive 100% latex mattress but purchased the toppers because the kids wanted their beds to be soft and comfortable like ours. I got them the best mix between quality and price I could find. Here's what they have, but with a bamboo cover that I don't see on the site now. Be sure to get a cover. The latex can rip and crumble and a cover really is worth it.

One more data point, we needed a new mattress for our guest room and wanted a latex/foam mattress and ended up with this in medium:

It was $550 shipped and my in-laws slept on it for a week and then bought one to use as their primary bed in their vacation home. I haven't actually slept on it but I have laid on it a fair amount and it's pretty nice.

The foundation could be contributing to the issue. We switched from a standard heavy-duty frame with a foundation and our mattress to a metal platform frame with just the mattress on it. Huge difference!

Pretty sure it's the yucky memory foam topper that's on the bed now... replace that w/ a nice latex model that's closer to the feel of the ultra plush pillow top of the other bed, and spousal unit will be a happy camper, er, sleeper. The foundation/box spring is in excellent shape.

A couple of years ago I was in the market for a new matress set. I decided upon a latex mattress, but I could just as easily have gone with a firm non-pillowtop coil spring mattress with a latex topper.

Be sure to get 100% natural latex. Organic is not necessary. Taladay is typically somewhat plusher than Dunlop.

It isn't a crazy idea. A Duxiana Dux bed is actually spring system with a topper on it. I checked them out once when searching for a new mattress. Very expensive! So, it was out simply due to cost.

Then I tried convincing my wife to go the ultra-firm mattress combined with a nice topper route. Think of it as a poor man's Dux bed. She said no and the look on her face made it 100% clear to never bring up the idea again in the future.

Despite that, a nice metal platform bed frame like the Spa Sensations Elite Smart Base Steel bed frame combined with an ultra-firm mattress and well chosen topper would probably make for a fine bed!
