XTRA DUMB Q: How to Kill Auto Loading Gifs, Flash, etc.?
Posted by: SteveO

Sorry for the dumb question, I would've googled but I'm not sure I know the terminology to enter. So on sites like Jalopnik, Gawker, etc there are auto loading processor hogs like this photo series of a jet. I"m assuming this is Flash-based:

[jalopnik.com]

I have AdBlockPlus but it doesn't seem to be killing it unless I click on ABP icon in my Chrome window and then actively click on the image killer. What to use so it does it automagically? Mainly I browse in Chrome. I went to my chrome control panel and there's a place there where you can kill all autoloaders but that is overkill (pardon the pun) for me as it requires a control-click to override. I know there's a solution that just lets you tap to run content...I'm sure I used to have it but now apparently stupid-did-ity has set in!

Thanks!

If these are running via Flash, Click-to-Plugin will keep them from loading until clicked on. Not sure if there is a Chrome version.

In Firefox I have Flash/Crash set to ask me if it can be turned on before it will play.

I have no Flash installed and the damn videos still play. HTML5 auto play is just as annoying. There's a hidden setting in Firefox to toggle auto play off. I just have to remember which one. smiling smiley

Ugh. Wired is doing something worse, but it is flash based so FF won't load it. I think that might be why they told people to turn off their adblockers. I think I want to edit my browser string so that websites think I am using a 3 year old flip phone.

I'm using TenFourFox, which does not support Flash, and the main video on the page you linked to still autoplayed. This in spite of Bluhell Firewall.

I too hate autoplay. It can virtually bring my PowerBook to a halt.

Easiest just to boycott sites that do this kind of thing. I don't understand why the execs at these places are so stupid. You'd think a place named "Wired" would know better.

I avoid sites that have that kind of mess. To'ally avoid.

From this thread [forums.macresource.com]
Won't stop everything, but in Firefox/TenFourFox goto
about:config -> media.autoplay.enabled -> change to false

Thanks for the tip! I've read about some changes that can be made in about:config but haven't quite gotten into fooling with them. Will give it a try.

ps: If anyone else tries this in Firefox or TenFourFox, you enter "about:config" in the browser address line. You may then have to dismiss a warning. Scroll down to the item you want to change. For media.autoplay.enabled you just have to double click on that line to change it to "false". Double clicking again changes it back.

I am pretty sure that if you ever reset Firefox/TenFourFox you will lose any changes made to about:config, so you may want to keep a list of any changes you make.

Looks like you could install this plugin for Firefox for the animated gif:

ClickToPlugin only works in Safari, but it can block both Flash, and has a setting in its preferences to also block HTML 5. This should stop most autoplay.

I found this about Chrome:
[superuser.com]
"Chrome comes with Click to Play built-in. Head over to chrome://chrome/settings/content#click, & enable Click to Play"
