I do not 'get' Nacho Libre. Just like Napolean Dynamite.

Both movies left me thinking how I had just wasted time. I have no idea why anyone would like Nacho Libre. And ND left me with an equally puzzled look on my face. Strange movies.

Aren't those teen movies? How old are you?

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

I'm 40. I have no idea if they are teen movies. Do they say? Like in some rating or something? Which movies are for 40 year olds? Because there is a lot of Disney on at our house.

Nacho libre was aimed at kids. They advertised it on Nick all the time.
Napolean Dynamite was also aimed at the under 18 group.

My son (16.5) saw that I had brought home Napoleon Dynamite from the library and asked me why I got it. He saw it and said even he and his friends thought it was terrible. I returned it without even watching it.

Nacho Libre looked too stupid to even borrow for free. And I generally like Jack Black.

my sister-in-law and her husband loved Napolean D. They are both in their late 30s, and have higher college degrees. Not your typical target market for these films.

Everyone likes what they like. That is why movie reviews are just opinions from people who watch a lot of movies. They aren't fact.

Napoleon Dynamite is one of those "love it or hate it" movies. There doesn't seem to be much middle ground. I thought it was a hoot and laughed my butt off but I can see how others would think the opposite. Haven't seen Nacho Libre but I suspect Jared Hess may be one of those directors who lucked out the first time and won't be able to repeat his success.

I think that Napolean Dynamite really doesn't make sense to people who have never been exposed to Eastern Washington, Eastern Oregon, and Idaho. The movie was SO accurate that you had to laugh at it. If you have no idea what that part of the country is like and just try to watch it for entertainment it just won't make much sense.

I agree ztir. I'm from Idaho (mostly) and 40, and I got quite a kick out of ND. It's a goofy movie that's unlike anything else you would see, which i liked. It's subtle, so its not die laughing funny. I haven't seen Nacho yet, but will. I'd rather my kids watch stuff like this than most of what's out there. kj.

kinda like borat/ali g

even if it was the only thing on free TV i would jut leave my TV off -- i dont get it

im sure it has some funny parts where i would laugh at it, but thats it

the "schickt" he does is as old as time, its not original

then again, i didnt think "office space" (the movie) was any good either...but then again i have never worked in taht kind of place. the office (TV) is funny, but its supposed to be, and i get it.

That must be it. I lived in Eastern Oregon for a few years while I was in grade school. My sister lives in Eastern Washington and I visit her there. Napoleon Dynamite reminds me of how it really was growing up in the country.

Borat
Napoleon Dynamite
Nacho Libre
Homestar Runner
The Office

You either get it, or you don't.

I'm almost 40, as are most of my friends. These are just the things we find funny. Sorry if they're not for you.

Nappy D is high on my favorite films of all-time list, and it gets even funnier to me on subsequent watchings. I love it. I'm in my 30s.

Really enjoyed Nacho Libre as well, but it was even funnier to me because I have been to live Mexican wrestling which made the movie even better. Surprisingly, my parents (in their 60's) loved Nacho Libre too. My father went two nights in a row (the second time with me) and he NEVER does that.

I liked Nap D. Like the Big Lebowski, the plot of the movie really doesn't matter. The offbeat characters make both movies good. They could be doing pretty much anything and it would still be funny.

...and there there is nothing funnier than The Onion!!!

NL isn't my kind of movie. I am 43 year old. However, my S/O's 10 year old grand niece and her 30 year old mother rolled on the floor laughing watching that movie. DIfferent folks different strokes!

I loved Napolean Dynamite. I've watched it at least twenty times with my kids and I still find it to be original and funny. Theme? It's a surrealist excercise on one of the The great human themes.. # 3: Geeks can win and get some play along the way... Eraserhead on a sunny day.

Nacho Libre? I saw it...Could have been better. a few funny moments. however, a couple of funny moments does not a movie make.

?

I'm suspicious of folks who didn't get Napolean D.

Mad props to lafinfil for correctly identifying the "Big Daddy" of these sorts of movies. It's almost a genre in itself.

Basically, these sorts of movies use the odd local accents/customs/mindset of the ordinary people of (blank) to frame their otherwise-traditional story. Probably one of the best-ever examples of this was "Fargo," which framed a traditional detective-v-murderer story against the (to me) bizarre ways of the good folk from Up North, Oh Yah.

If you're FROM the area being utilised, you might find the movie hilariously accurate (Fargo) or borderline offensive (True Stories). If you're not from around there, the device can be mesmerising (Napoleon Dynamite) or ineffective (Royal Tennanbaums).

I notice that the sort of people who often say "I didn't get it" about these sorts of films are the ones who focused only on the story (and found it weak or unfunny) because either they are so accustomed to the odd accent/customs/mindset of the folk being profiled that they don't notice the use of the device (The Office), or because they have difficulty believing that anyone on earth actually behaves like that in real life (Nacho Libre).

Perhaps Police Academy 87 is more up their alley?

BTW, 42, have only lived on the "coasts," and thoroughly enjoy Napoleon Dynamite.
However, I don't "get" Jack Black at all, and haven't seen Nacho.

I'm 52 and enjoyed the heck out of Napoleon Dynamite, and ate up
Da Ali G show on HBO like so much candy. Can't wait to see Borat.

I have to confess, however, that I'm one of the few people I've met
who actually laughed his head off watching "White Chicks".

So you pay $10 and give away 2 hours of your life, leaving with an empty, unfulfilled feeling?
I hope this isn't prophetic of the letdown that may be waiting for you when your exciting and fascinating new car purchase fades into the background and you realize your life is not any better for the expense.

I suffer from the same sensitivity that you do. A few nuggets of wisdom were shared with me and I'm "trying" to incorporate them into my life. First, remember that nobody can hurt your feelings unless you let them. You can always reject what is being forced on you emotionally.
Second, nothing changes unless you change it. If you don't want the behavior to be repeated then you need to take action. Otherwise the kid has learned that his behavior is the way to get things done, because everyone lets him get away with it.
In the meantime I sympathize because I've been there.

h': Fun cars and motorcycles never fail to put a smile on my face. And no, I did not spend a dime on those movies.

I loved Napoleon Dynomite. I think the beauty of the movie was it's innocence. There was no swearing, no sex, no violence yet it was funny.

Nacho Libre was advertised on Nickelodeon because it was a Nickelodeon film. It was made by the same director that made Napoleon Dynomite and thus it's fit for viewers of any age, kids or adults.

Both of these movies are either love 'em or hate 'em. I don't think age has anything to do with it. Personally, I loved them both.

The director of those films also does the really unamusing Citibank commercials with the Eastern European goofball who babbles about the Citibank rewards programs. Lousy advertising, IMHO, because it's hard to remember what the commerical is promoting: you're too distracted by the silly-a$$™ characters to pay attention to the message.

I'm no kid, grew up in the East Bay, CA area, and hated the Napolean Dynamite commercials.

But then-- I saw the movie. Hysterical, I cracked up. I loved the entire dead-pan delivery, too.

Nacho Libre did nada for me. I like a lot of Jack Black's stuff, and was hoping to like this one, but no. No. No way, José. Didn't hate it, but I was glad I NFed it instead of going to the show.
