Here at work a group of us have a Mr. Coffee machine that we share. It's got a 'warmer plate' on it that runs pretty much all day (we shut it off at night). The cheap Formica countertop below it is showing signs of heat distress. What can I do to stop the damage ? It's sort of against company policy to have coffee pots, so I don't want to give any excuse to get rid of it. Because coffee !!!!! (shaking maniacally).

I'm thinking of one of those glass 'cutting boards' that stores sell, but I was wondering if I can use one of those thin silicone 'cutting boards' instead. Or will that just melt ?

We had a similar problem in my office. We turned off the warming plate (not sure if yours can do that) and everyone uses the microwave to warm up coffee. Also saved us from burnt coffee taste.

You don't need to get an Epicurean but I happen to like them because they are well made, thin and dishwasher-safe.

You may also be able to use a heavy-duty cafeteria tray. I have a heavy-duty cafeteria tray beneath my Bonavita coffee maker. Something along these lines:

I don't have that one exactly but I purchased a few of them at a local restaurant supply shop.

I'd probably go with a grooved cutting board since I'm not sure if a cafeteria tray can handle significant amounts of heat. The bottom of the Bonavita has feet and is reasonably well insulated. Not sure if a Mr. Coffee is built into a similar manner.

pqrst- we could, but many of us use stainless steel no spill coffee mugs. No nuking allowed !

I'm thinkin' billb is on the right track, or your silicone mat should work; IIRC those things are good up to around 500°. I had a buddy in the glass biz many years ago, and he got us a few 12 - 16 inch beveled edge squares/rectangles that have been used for that kind of stuff. Basically any durable insulating material that doesn't emit toxic odors under Mr. Coffee's heat is gonna be fine. Good luck.

I really like the idea of a Corian cutout.

My buddy's wife has a couple of these from their countertop redo, and they work great.

The tile square is pretty compelling, for a quick fix.

I'd get a couple, because I'm sure someone *will* slide it off the counter.
