Help: HP 870 inkjet dying?

The last two cartridges on my HP 870Cse have been getting all gunky on the printhead...accumulated dried toner. Is my legendary printer finally biting the dust? Or are the toner cartridges the blame. Both were well within there expiration dates.

Could this be a printer problem or just bad toner? I use it on a print server (built into Asante router) and the foomatic/CUPS package from linuxprinting.org.

The low-cost Brother laser printers look like good replacements.

printer has never been cleaned... output looks like a near empty cartridge, but it is relatively new. Do you know where can you be assured of getting a good cartridge (HP 45) for it that is not too old or been stored in bad environment?

Man, I still have one of those things at home, haven't used it in about 2 years though, not since I got my G5 and went to OS X.

It was a great printer though, I loved being able to print out to the last drop of EACH color, regardless if one ran out, unlike some printers nowadays cough*EPSON*cough....

I wouldn't mind using it again, I just don't have that adapter you are using.

Duh.

I'm going back into that post to edit it.

I used to have it connected to the ethernet network using appletalk adapters and the serial port. But the printing just got so slow. So I went ahead and transitioned to the print server using its parallel port and the foomatic drivers. Its draft mode is fast, and the HP45 cartridges are large, especially compared to the HP15 on my 940c (same price too, go figure.). But maybe it is just nearing its end of life.

I put my 940c on the server now, until I have a chance to look at the 870. I remember paying $399 for the 870 as a return at compusa (reg. $499 back then). Even still have the box in the attic.

The church where I help out has a donated HP laserjet 4 (i think, could be a 5) that needs a toner cartridge. As for new, the Brother HL-5170DN looks nice. CNet says my local OfficeMax has it for $200. It does duplex and is ethernet-ready. Reg price is high $200s at other places.
