I know several people bought those used G3 iBooks from OWC when they had them before, now they have some more in stock. I just thought someone might be interested.

After some time with them, how many purchasers are satisfied with the purchase?

interesting to note a jump from 20 gb hard drive to 30 gb is $10.
seems like a no-brainer in a notebook.

Is that a trick question?

They are by no means fast by today's standards.... And honestly, we sought out and brought in more units because of the demand experienced on the first round we did. A lot sold at full price to other dealers too.

Bottom line is that they are very capable for web browsing, e-mail, word processing, iTunes, iPhoto, and other basic stuff... Seem to be popular with students especially.... and as someone who personally used a PowerBook 100 in college - an iBook G3 is a world ahead of that for basic school work stuff. Not gonna be playing games on it, not ideal for photoshop (granted not half bad under OS 9 for that older version).

I was honestly skeptical of offering this kind of product. And honestly, we've gained a lot of experience in working with the several hundred units shipped so far to make for the best experience possible with them. Not everyone can/wants the latest system and these are a reasonably priced option for those who's needs can be met by 500-600MHz G3 Laptops.

Mine has been great, no problems at all.
Works fine as a surf around the house solution.

I like the one I got for my mom. i'm sure she will too. the only thing i don't like is the giant-ass asset tag on the top lid.

Can't you get rid of the sticker? Usually, you can peel off the top layer and get the rest off with window cleaner. Sometimes you might have to spray a paper towel with widow cleaner and lay it on the sticker (the paper towel keeps the cleaner from dripping) to soak for awhile. Sometimes it takes Soft Scrub in the case of security-stickers. (SS is also good for polishing out minor scratches.)

I'm thinking of one for my parents too. They live in a rual area w/o broadband.

Larry, what does it mean that the internal modems are not guaranteed??? It is just that you have not tested them? thanks.

Oh, it peels right off. I used a plastic scraper and not too much effort. But what it leaves behind is whats annoying. There's this "STOLEN PROPERTY! Call blah blah blah" underneath the metal sticker. And it looks like it was melded with the cover of the ibook. I mean it feels like its part of the surface. A rough nasty part of the surface but not something some cleaner will take off.

There are a number of sticker removal sprays and liquids on the market. I used to use one that smelled like Marvel Mystery Oil that was supposed to be safe to use on plastic magnetic tape reels to remove old labels. It did a good job, unfortunately I don't emember who sold it. So there has to be something that will remove the left behind part of the security sticker out there.

Doesn't WD-40 remove sticker residue?

Not sure if it would harm the plastic, though.

this isn't sticker residue. this is like a super hardened glob of plasticized something or other.

The warranty sticker is on the asset tag, as well.
I bought a set of used plastics for the book for $1 on ebay, took about 30 seconds to replace the top cover with a nice used one.

The asset tags are epoxied on - don't try to remove unless you like a surface as bumpy and cratered like the moon is.

Good Luck!

With rare exception, all of them have modems. I know of only one so far that hasn't worked... that said, in keeping the cost down it was not efficient for us to do proper testing of the modem and that was opted out of.

Another question is on those asset stickers. The serial numbers are released and when you purchase the ibook from us, you can register it for free with the program. Kinda of a neat bonus. I'd not expect people to be out stealing these things - but if you ever left/lost it someplace - might just come back with that.

Anyway....

w/o any access to an optical drive, i imagine if i wanted to update the OS to 10.4 i would get that done via firewire and target mode from my g5/imac.

will 10.4.8 even run on a g3/500/600?

any really world users of these ibooks running 10.4.8?

thanks in advance

be well

Good question rob.
I would likely upgrade the ram to 640 if 10.4.8 ran reasonably.
Anyone?

i'd cover the remains of the tag with a cool band sticker, or something else that appealed to me.

I have had a dual USB iBook G3 500 since new that is running 10.4.8 with 640 MB RAM. It is fine for email, surfing, word processing, iPhoto, and iTunes. It only has 8 MB of video RAM, but will play DVDs fine (has a combo drive and was BTO with a 20 GB HD). Obviously not the fastest dog around the track but still adequate for many tasks.

Thanks, jawg.
Memory upgrade soon!
To be followed by the target mode software upgrade, of course.

How hard is it for a user to upgrade RAM on an iBook? Is it fairly accessible?

It's right underneath the KB. Keep in mind you have to ditch one of the two sticks to upgrade.

I suffer from the same sensitivity that you do. A few nuggets of wisdom were shared with me and I'm "trying" to incorporate them into my life. First, remember that nobody can hurt your feelings unless you let them. You can always reject what is being forced on you emotionally.
Second, nothing changes unless you change it. If you don't want the behavior to be repeated then you need to take action. Otherwise the kid has learned that his behavior is the way to get things done, because everyone lets him get away with it.
In the meantime I sympathize because I've been there.

The ram is super easy. I bought an additional 512 along with the OWC ibook I got.
