We are toying with the idea of getting a smallish (sleeps 2-4) travel trailer. I have a Ford Expedition that will pull a fairly large one, but we don't need anything huge. It would be nice to have a bathroom. I am not wild about 'hybrids', which have canvas pop-outs, as canvas presents its own problems. And we're not overly enamored of frills—fancy cabinetry, upholstery, rugs, etc.—should be easy to keep clean inside.

I rather like the fiberglass-body camping trailers, though most seem to be made in small facilities far from New England (where we are), without dealer networks, and they seem pricey. I was thinking of something used, though new is not out of the question.

Suggestions? Favorites?

Perusing the Boston Craig's List, but nothing exciting. Figure we'll do some looking at dealer lots next month. No time at the moment.

We have a dealer that sells to different small campers. I looked at one out of curiosity but came away thinking that a tent made more sense -- larger, cheaper, and easier to haul.

Scamp: Located in MN...ugh
Casita: Located in TX...ugh
TAP Max-S: Located all over but pricey!

Used models in that class usually get listed and sold the same day. Ms Markintosh is really after that not having to walk to a campground bathroom in the middle of the night.

Yeah, we're in the same boat.

Besides the Scamps, there is the Escape (British Columbia), and the double-walled (and too-expensive) Oliver (in TN); also the ParkLiner, in NC (new company). Didn't know about the T@B (not TAP—right?) teardrops, which are neat but I think too small.

I really like the Oliver, but it's priced more than a used Airstream (as wave rider suggests), which would be cool, too.

Their forum has a For Sale/Wanted section, so that might be a good place to look. I saw a couple of Escapes, but nowhere near us.

My daughter and SIL bought a '60s 20' Avion, which they have been customizing (took out the bathroom and installed bunks for their three boys). It's an ongoing project, which I don't need. The Avion was made of aluminum like the Airstreams.

Let me know how you make out in your search. We may end up just getting a used Jayco or something of traditional construction, of which there are plenty at dealers and on Craig's List, and then if we're still happy with trailering, looking for a fiberglass one down the road (as it were).

somebody already mentioned vintage airstream...
we have a 25ft airstream that just turned 40 years old, bought him 4 years ago from craigslist and he has been great.
as with any big purchase, don't be in a rush to buy. if you're after a vintage trailer, make sure you know exactly what a good trailer is... as far as not getting burned with expensive repairs. read up and ask questions. check all the areas where water is used (kitchen, bath) for leaks, floor, wall rot, etc. if you don't know much about trailers, hire an inspector before purchase to give it the once over.

And possible good news!

There's a 2003 Casita 17' in Richmond, and daughter and hubby, who live west in Powhatan, have agreed to check it out (if still available), and buy it for us. Then we'll go down and pick it up next month. If this works out, it will save me a lot of toil and trouble—and time—and I'll get a molded fiberglass trailer!
