Is there a good way to execute shell commands from FMP 8?

Its been a while since I've done filemaker work but now I have a client that likes to DIY it until he's backed himself into a good hole. I'd like to use regex from FMP 8. What is the best way to do this? Its possible that the solution will be hosted at some point so i'd like to avoid applescript and plugins if possible.....but i'll give in if i have to.

Applescript is how I always do it.

It is possible with AppleScript or with plug-ins.

As far as I know, FMP 8 does not have regex.

The best way I found to excute command line operations from FMP is a plug-in called "Shell". Unlike the Do AppleScript script command, it returns the results of the operation back to FMP.
